[Solved] Stupid question on text in 2020

Post by magnoliasouth »

I really hate this because this is the stupidest question for someone who has been using PSP since Jasc, but... I just upgraded to 2020 and the first project is already an issue. When I enter text on its own layer, it seems locked. It insists on putting the text at the top of the image and will not allow me to move it anywhere. I can't use Object > Align nor just grab it freehand.

I have looked at the settings and am not seeing anything that appears to be the problem. While I'm on that, I cannot tell if justification is on or off. It looks the same to me, which indicates that it's locked somehow; somewhere!

I understand that they have redesigned some functioning on text, but am I no longer allowed to move my text? That's how it seems. It's probably something simple but for the life of me I cannot figure it out.

Any advice?

ETA: I am not still in edit text mode either.

If you can't move the text then you are most likely still in text edit mode.

On the tool options toolbar there is a check mark button. Click that to accept your changes.

Or double click anywhere on the canvas. Once you are out of text edit mode you can move and manipulate the text like a vector layer

Sorry, but I tried that. :( Any other ideas?

If you have a problem with a tool then restart from scratch and with a simple example.
1. In PSP 2020 I started a new document 800 x800 pixels white background.
2. After choosing the Text tool I reset it to default
01ResetTextTool.jpg
Then change Points to Pixels, and make sure you have text as normal not bold or any previous choices.
3. At this stage my Text Tool Options looks like this
02Settings.jpg
(1) shows the Text Allignment mode and (2) I also need to change the Stroke width to 0. Make sure Create as still shows Vector.

3. I type in a word and then click the Tick under Action to Apply Changes
A bounding box appears around the word and left clicking in the centre and dragging allows me to move the word(s).

Are you able to do all this or at what point does it fail?

I am so very sorry. I never got a notification that you responded. I did manage to work it out! It turns out to be a big fat duh on my part, which I figured was probably the case. I had a vector frame and while I was clicking in the center of the canvas, it was still attaching itself as a text on curve, so it was jumping to the top. There was plenty of room on the canvas so I had not suspected that this was the issue. Live and learn I guess! I ended up having to write the text in a new image and then copying the text layer back to the working image.

Many thanks for your input though!

If you hold the Alt key when clicking to start a new text object it won't attach itself to any vectors. This will allow you to click directly on top of another vector object and never having to worry about it attaching as text on a curve.

Sweet! I have always wondered about that. I'm not much of a keyboard person because I have trouble remembering them, but this I have to write down. It's a sticky issue. :P

It was weird though because the image was 250px high, the frame was 5px wide and the text was only 12 pts, so I never dreamed that this was the problem. Seemed like plent of space to me, but it definitely was the problem after all. Thanks again for the tip!
