default file names of captured videos
Hi
I have been using Corel VS for many years. Earlier I noticed that the default file names of captured videos take the date of capturing, e.g. uvs141130-001.avi, uvs141130-001-2.avi....; which meant that VS captured that specific video on the 30th November, 2014 with the last ascending digits as the full video footage was split by scenes into small clips. The three digits after the date show the individual separately captured videos on the same date. Recently (in January and March 2020) I captured video under VS X9 from my DV camcorder and the file names didn't take the date of capturing, but constantly remained vs190112-001-......avi. There was no problem as long as I captured them in different folders by the dates of capture (i.e. video clips captured on 01.01.2020 with file names vs190112-001-.....avi and video clips captured on 07.01.2020 with file names vs190112-001-....avi were put in two separate folders). In March I captured video clips in the second (07 January) folder which took the default names again vs190112-001-....avi and the conflict of identical file names in the same folder arose: my clips captured earlier with the same names were fully deleted.
Why did captured video clips under VS X9 not take the deafult names of capturing dates?
In Windows, should a file come to a folder with names already existing, its name automatically gets an ascending suffix in brackets (1)/(2).. etc. VS doesn't have this automatic file name adjustment?
How can I manually set or change the file names of captured clips before the start of capturing process? (screenshot is attached)
Thanks
Csaba

Re: default file names of captured videos
Hi
Long time since I worked with mini dv tapes and captured to dv.avi
As far as I can recall the names show the recording date, the time code set on the tape and does not show the captured date
Capture for dv.avi is probibally the wrong description
Mini dv tapes record to a dv format, it is that format that is Transferred to the pc, what you have on the tape is what you get dv.avi
It is the timecde that is used to name the files. Assuming you choose split by scene
That is the difference in your capture date and the file name, the file name being the recording date.
Your image is hard to see but does show capturing to DVD and not DV.AVI

Re: default file names of captured videos
The only way I ever found to give my own names to incoming DV/AVI was to use WinDV as the capture software. It is old but still available at http://windv.mourek.cz/

Re: default file names of captured videos
Thanks for the answers.
I enclose Windows File Manager screenshots where you can see the name of the files captured by VS with the date of creation/saving to the drive of my PC. Creation or saving of these files takes place when VS captures them. (captured files 1.1 and captured files 2.1jpg
Date of recording of video can be seen when playing the clip itself in editing mode under VS. (date of recording 1.1.jpg)
In the end, I was forced to capture all files with file names of vs190112-001-....avi in separate folders on each date of capture, and then rename to vs200112-001-....avi with Windows File Manager. Following this, I could merge the folders in which names were different. To view the attachments, pls enlarge them.
Thanks

Your video in the library is uvs141130
Those are the date of recording
30th day of November 2014
I do not understand why you are having to rename the files
But if you use Kens suggestion to use WinDV then you can choose a name format for your avi files

Re: default file names of captured videos
Given it some thought, it was a long time ago when i last used FV avi but yes the naming of the file format does cause a problem with the orderlata wrote: I do not understand why you are having to rename the files

I must say that it may be a windows explorer problem, as Video Studio will use that to order its files.
The problem is with numbering the first 10 using uvs141130-001-1.avi
Had the numbering used uvs141130-001-01.avi there would be no problem, in fact using uvs141130-001-001.avi would be better
So the first part of the name does not really matter its the Suffix numbers that cause the order problem.
Sorry it took so long to get my brain into gear.
There is a free rename file called Bulk Rename, a little complex till we get used to it but will rename to any format
https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/
although Windows Explorer will rename all selected files in one go, batch rename i suppose

Sorry to correct you: name of the file: uvs141130, date of recording: 2014.11.14 (in English: 14.11.2014.) I captured the video 16 days later than recorded. These can be clearly seen from the screenshot of VS Editing panel. I marked them with yellow notice. I had to rename the files because VS took the same name (vs190112-001-....avi) for video clips that were captured next time. If they come into the same folder as the earlier ones (for a complete project I have used a single folder to place all clips in), the earlier ones get deleted. My problem has been that VS didn't take the date of capture as file name as opposed to what it had always done in the past.
Based on my earlier experience the default file name structure of videos captured from a mini DV camcorder in DV format looks as follows: (u)vsyymmdd-ascending 3 digits-ascending 3 digits.avi
where:
yymmdd: the date of capture;
ascending 3 digits: the sequence of videos captured on the same date. If you capture your first video today (03.04.2020) it gets the name vs200403-001.avi. If you capture another video today, it gets vs200403-002.avi, so the ascending 3 digits are to differentiate the videos captured on the same day;
ascending 3 digits: if I select split video by scene option on capturing, the file name of videoclips receive an ascending 3 digit suffix;
vs200403-002-003.avi file name means the 3rd videoclip of the 2nd video captured on 03.04.2020.
Since I use VS, the deafult file names have been working this way. My problem is that it did not work this way under VSX9.

Re: default file names of captured videos
Hi
Apologies I do feel quite embarrassed, I’ll blame it on old age
I dug out the old Pana G400 Mini DV to test capture, surprising it worked without problems.
So yes I can say that capturing / transferring Mini DV tape using Video Studio does in fact use the capture date by default.
However all is not lost as it does appear that Video Studio has indeed been updated to allow us to choose a name for our files, something I think Ken will find interesting, had this been available when I worked with DV I doubt I would need to use WinDV.
From your original post and the image you highlight the file name, did you try typing a new name there.?
The attached image taken from X9 shows the file names, again interesting that they have been updated to use a better format / order The second image shows the file names as shown using Windows Explorer, there is no option using Windows to show the recording date.
The file names however are in order of capture and record order, when viewed in the library “List View” does show the record date. The difference I see compared to yours is the Suffix of - 001-2.avi, when I see - 001-02.avi
The first captured file using - 001.avi has also changed inn my view
The addition of the “0” to make it 02 may be important in sorting orders in Windows folders, at least it used to be a problem
I’m a little confused ( no change there) as to why your file names are different to what I see.
The last image of the Library List View does show the recording date as Jan 2013 Csaba Jurenka
Are you connecting the camera through a firewire card IEEE?

Re: default file names of captured videos
Hi Trevor
Thanks for the reply.
I connect the camera to my PC through firewire.
The screnhots uploaded earlier just wanted to demonstrate the capture date vs recoeding date as file name. I ran into this file name problem this year.
I attached 3 screenhots of clips: one in VS editing mode, two in Win File Manager
gocart clips details1.jpg:
-the clips in yellow rectangle (vs190112-001-03.avi to vs190112-001-10.avi) were captured on 01. January 2020, as seen from go cart clips file manager1.jpg as date of file saving; although captured on 01.01.2020, VS gave them the file name 190112
- the clips in red rectangle have the same file name as those in yellow rectangle, still they can be all in the same VS thumbnail folder. The the clips in red rectangle were captured on 31.March, 2020 as seen from city clips file manager1.jpg
The same file names did not cause a problem, beacuse the clips themselves were captured and saved in different folders in. VS folder consists of the thumbnails only, same file names can exist in the same thumbnail folder while the clip files with same names can exist only in different Windows folders.
The problem arose in March this year when I captured additional videos (for the same project), VS gave them the vs190112-001-....avi names again and I did not save them in a separate (in a third) Windows folder. The new clips, coming to the place of the old ones with identical file names immediately deleted my old clip files from my PC removing them as well out of my already editied project. I realized then the problem of wrong default file names and tried to change file names manually with no succes.
As you mentioned that file names of captured video can be set manually, I'll try it again. However, I find no explanation why VS gave my captured clips completely false and identical default names three times in this year.
Sorry to take it so long.
Thanks for your help

Csaba Jurenka

Re: default file names of captured videos
Hi
Very confusing as to why your files are using those dates
And I do not understand why as I have never experienced that before.
As I say it have been a long time since I worked with DV but capturing went ok and showed that Corel have updated the process.
Now we can give the captured files a name, were you able to do that?
Some thoughts on Mini DV tapes and timecodes
When we use a new DV tape the tape is completely blank as it does not even have a time code
Before recording our footage we were recommended to set a time code by recording a complete tape in one go.
We would keep the lens cap on to record a black tape, except it embedded the timecode.
If we did not do that we can have problems as …….
Lets say we record 10 minutes that also set the timecode from 00:00:00:00 to say 00:10:20:05
We may rewind the tape to play and review the footage stopping the tape on a blank section after 00:10:20:05 does not have a time code
Starting recordings at this point will insert a code starting at 00:00:00:00, effectively the tape now contains a duplicate timecode
This could be done several times, it does mess up capture, possible with the program pausing capture as it passes the blank sections.
I am just trying to think of reasons why your are having these problems.
So do you set the time code on your tapes before recording for real?
The above may explain why you have the same file names highlighted in the yellow and red rectangles as you may have duplicate time codes.
another thought....
Is the cameras time clock set correctly, It does seem for some of your recordings may be 1 month out of sync?
If you playback the tape on the camcorder do you see any black / blank sections, even if they are a split second, or is playback seamless, that is transferring between recordings without any gaps.
I know that Video Studio DV capture process has been updated for the better, what I don’t know is when that happened.

Re: default file names of captured videos
Hi Trevor
Thanks for the reply.
In the meantime I realized what might have happened to my captured files. As you wrote, VS might have been updated to make videos be given file names by the user's choice. I did not know it. I captured videos in January this year (2020) and didn't notice that VS gave my freshly captured videos as file names the capture date of my videos transferred from camcorder to my pc last year. 22.01.2019) At your suggestion, I tried and managed to give videos file names of my choice, so in January 2020, I could have changed the wrong file names given by VS as well. Am I right when saying that when capturing DV tapes from camcorder to pc, default file names are no longer the date of capture, but you should give your own names to video files to be captured.

Csaba
