Project-New folder or in Pictures for projects

Post by brucefl »

Well, you would think I would do it the right way after all this time.
I was wondering how others do projects. Do you make a new folder (and name it) in Video Studio, or do you prefer to keep the pictures in the
picture folder in windows? I know it sounds simple, sometimes chasing photo's around can be a nuisance.
I was scanning them into the picture folder under a named folder then importing into the project, necessitating keeping two copies of the pictures.
Thanks Bruce

There is more than one way to skin this cat. And it usually boils down to personal preference.

Many users prefer to use the project folders within VS for their work: use the add + button in the media and instant project library items and name the folder, insert related source material, vsp's et al. Issues with that when you remove VS for any reason (eg, re-install, a newer version, or it p***ed you off so much you went to a competing software, even tho vsp's are not recognised by any competitor, and vice versa, but you still want to use the source material).

I prefer to use explorer to create separate folders for each type of content, eg
- program files, eg, the VS application
- multi media source material (separate folders for video, pictures, audio), and within in those folders, locate each file by the related event, eg Bali Holiday 2018) . The video folder for an event gets the vsp's for that event.

Which means I can use material for any purpose without any specific reference to VS project folders, or even power director files.

Hi
Similar to David

I use Windows Explorer to create a folder for each project, usually on a different drive to C
Camcorder video are imported here, a sub folder could be used for Images and audio, depends on how many images I have.
I start a project and usually allocate my windows folder as the working folder via F6, and save any VSP project files to this folder.
I try to keep all my files used in a project in this dedicated folder.
Using the library
I will create a new folder giving it a suitable name, as from 2020 the library structure has been updated, I think for the better but works just the same as earlier versions
I Import my files to this library folder, the clips are virtual clips, simply thumbnails representing the files on the hard drive.
My library is usually occupied by files used in my current projects, I do not use the library to archive the clips, that is done in Windows Explorer
Once my projects are complete I have no issues in clearing the library of course I may have several project on the go at once.

If I wish to import files again it is easy as the Windows Explorer folders have all my project files in tact.

A process called Smart Packaging takes a copy of all files used in a project and saves to a new folder, this can be useful to archive your projects.
Does have some limitations and may not work for all projects, Once created the original files could be deleted to clean up your hard drives.

In a nut shell, although I use the library I do not rely on it as a means of storing my files, just good housekeeping on windows explorer.
