Hi folks!
New user, and a search in the forum did not reveal a viable solution so your grace is appreciated.
Started with the trial software after reading very positive reviews of the package. During the process of going through tutorials and familiarizing myself with the software I discovered that video imported would not playback audio. Nothing fancy, just an .MPG from an authored homemade DVD (NOT commercial!) I want to cut for a demo. Buried in another forum was a hint that the possible problem could be licensing; that the trial software won't playback Dolby Digital.
What's been done:
1.) Purchased a license for VS Ultimate. No love.
2.) Converted the file (Handbrake) to .mp4 and .mkv. No love.
3.) Confirmed audio playback works within VS (that is, using the correct interface) by importing an .mp3 and playing it back. I'm also able to playback the audio samples included with the program.
What's the problem here? I don't mind facing down issues or my own ignorance, but it's frustrating to be stopped cold in my tracks right out of the gate. Help!!

Re: VideoStudio 2020 Audio Playback
Welcome to the forum.
And the problem is Dolby. Corel in their wisdom (NOT!!) have in effect dropped it. If users have Windows 7, support for it has gone completely. I see you are using Win 10. Well, if your video has Dolby 5.1, that too is no longer supported. However, Dolby dual channel stereo still is. So I'm afraid you will need to convert your video to use either Dolby stereo or another format. These days mp4 with AAC audio seem to be the most common formats. But mp3 or even LPCM/wav are also good.
I have no idea why Corel did this, and I suspect no one else but Corel could say why. Someone suggested it may have been that Dolby was asking too much in licensing fees, and fewer people were using it anyway, so Corel dropped it. But as I understand it, Dolby is not even charging a licensing fee. That may be the case, at least for dual channel stereo!
So the mystery remains...

Re: VideoStudio 2020 Audio Playback
Something about Dolby clearly has Corel in a twist. But technically, the last of the Dolby patents expired in Feb 2016, so licensing should no longer be an issue.

Re: VideoStudio 2020 Audio Playback
Hi
If your video I assume MPEG2 is using Surround Sound DD 5.1 then using Windows 10 and Video Studio should play the sound but only stereo.
Any video using 5.1 -- the properties will show as Stereo 2.0 L/R or simply Digital Dolby
When you ripped the DVD how did you do that? did you use Video Studio Import Digital Media options
1 / Right Click Timelines for Insert Digital media
2 / Select Input Source as your disc – Video_TS folder – OK
3 / Start Process – shows the files as thumbnails
4 / select the Titles by placing a tick top left
5 / Select a working folder for the files then Start Import
