When there is no ad to display, PSP2020 closes normally...

I have also considered that but was unable to check or replicate the problem.
I can replicate by editing an image, usually applying the crop tool
Then close the program, when prompted to save simply NO and close without saving
Now for me the program hangs.
I cannot replicate hanging in task manager using 2021
Re: PSP2020: Not Shutting Down, Still running in background
Has anyone tried un-checking "Allow cataloging to complete after exiting the program" (under File> Preferences> General Program Preferences)
I was told to do this a while back by a friend who had same problem, and it does work on my laptop computer, but not on my desktop computer. I still have to "End Task" on my desktop to keep it from running after I shut PSP down.

I had the same problem and had to go to Task Manager every time I wanted to use it. During the Black Friday period I upgraded to PSP 2021. The problem is gone. Next time it hits $39.95, upgrade.

It is an advert problem!
The microsoft update bug fried my operating system, so I had to reload windows back along.
Since then I have been using psp and not stopped adverts in the settings and not had one problem with psp not reopening.
The moment you turn them off in setting.... it is back to problems again >.<

Another workaround would be to create a batchfile on your desktop to kill the process manually each time you close the app.
Steps:
Open your notepad and add the following line:
(the app's filename may differ depending on the version you use)
Give the batch file a name like "Kill Corel.bat" and place it on your desktop. Each time you close Paint Shop Pro, click the "Kill Corel" icon to make sure that the app process is terminated. Or click it when PSP refuses to start. Not a great solution but still faster than going through the Task Manager.
Steps:
Open your notepad and add the following line:
Code: Select all
taskkill /F /IM "Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo.exe"Give the batch file a name like "Kill Corel.bat" and place it on your desktop. Each time you close Paint Shop Pro, click the "Kill Corel" icon to make sure that the app process is terminated. Or click it when PSP refuses to start. I have this with 2019. Whats worse is that when you try to open it again it won't launch.
It drives me crazy. so much so i check processexplorer (which i always have rumming,) every time i open it.
