Layer mask/clipping

Post by Kentucco »

Is there any way to do what I believe is called layer "Masking" in Photoshop or "Clipping" in OpenCanvas?

To better explain: You have a drawing on one layer but want to make a secondary layer with another so you don't mess up the original.

Example:
Oval 1 (Purple) is on one layer and Oval 2 (Green) is overlapping it on the second layer above it.

Now, I want to mask/clip the second layer so it stays within the borders of the drawing on Layer 1. This is the expected result:

In Photoshop and OpenCanvas, this is done with a click of a button I believe. I'm having trouble doing this in PaintShop. Is it not possible to do this without selecting the entire outside of Layer 1 then just erasing it on Layer 2 or am I missing something?

Try this:

-> Right-click on top layer in the Layers Palette
-> Properties
-> Blend Range Tab
-> Set as shown on my screen capture

EDIT - I was a bit slow getting this posted and the renowned expert did get there!

Perhaps some of the experts will come up with a quicker way. When I have done this sort of thing in the past the steps I used were:
1. Create first circle as a vector layer above the background (drawing the circle should create that layer automatically)
2. Using the new layer, select the circle - e.g. magic wand with 'Feather' set to 0 and 'use all layers' unchecked
3. Create a mask layer based on the first circle layer and its selection: select that layer as the active one, choose Layer/New Mask Layer/Show selection
4. This will have created a layer group with the mask above the first circle
5. Create a new vector layer and draw the second circle
6. Drag the new layer to a position above the first circle but below the mask - you can still move the second circle around to position it as needed

It might appear to be a lot of steps but it's quite quick when you have done a few. Keeping the two circles in different layers allows for easier adjustment. Once you are happy, you can merge down the layers.

Another way. I started with all raster layers with selected circles and flood filled with different colors blue top and red in middle:
01LayerSetup.jpg
Activate red layer, use magic wand set to RGB and Add to select the red circle
02Magicwandon redlayer.jpg
Then activate the top blue layer, do Selections > Invert and press the delet key.
03ActivatebluelayerinvertDelete.jpg
Finish with Selections > None

Hello, yes it is quite possible. Good answers already, but here is another one showing the exact thing you are asking: clipping a layer to its underlying layer non-destructively.

1. Make the desired selection on the underlying layer (blue circle)
2. In the layers palette, activate the top layer (green circle)
3. Use the mask icon with Show Selection (or from menu Layers->New mask layer->Show selection)

Here is a gyazo for it (the blue circle is already selected): https://gyazo.com/ead0a8c4cbc62b35bc4b1d976ab25362

Hope it helps.
