video orientation

Post by rkstudio »

Can someone tell me if I can change the video orientation from 9:16 to 16:9? I went to Corel discovery and they are obviously wrong about it. I followed the instructions and nothing happened even though they indicated that's all you have to to is select the drop down, select 16:9 and that's it. problem solved. Nothing can be further from the truth.

The advice is true - as far as it goes. What it doesn't say is that it applies for versions 2018 and after. In those versions there is an icon below the preview window to allow this.
But since you have (your profile,, latest version) only X9 installed, that option won't apply. Updating to 2020 would get this feature but also gets you into a realm of issues - see the forum posts about problems with 2020 - updates to 2018 and 2019 now not possible, unless you know someone who has an unused DVD in either version).
Rotating (clockwise or ACW) the image is assumed to be unacceptable. So - a suggestion that probably won't make you terribly happy. It won't change the orientation, but will adjust the viewed image to the part you want to see
- insert the photo or clip into the overlay track
- select it and the clip/image should show in the preview window with sizing handles
- use the sizing handles to adjust the image in the preview window to that part of the visuals you really want to see - all of it would mean the image is small, enlarging part of it will fill - possibly completely - the preview window. Adjust the position of the selected image in the preview window (click n drag) to suit your need.
- if the image you still have in the preview window has a 'black' background you don't want, then insert a colour (gallery graphic options) into the timeline and stretch it to cover the whole of the overlay track use - this way the preview image has a colour background.

Thank you very much David but I sound the solution to change from 9:16 to 16:9 and it works perfectly. First thing though, I do have VS2020 Pro. I got it because when I was on the phone with tech support, I told him an issue I had that my X9 Ultimate was crashing in about 30 seconds after launch...over and over again. So, it might be BS but he said that I had X9 for 4 years and at that time, they did not support it anymore for WIndows 10 so he said I should upgrade, so I took the bait and upgraded to 2020pro. It seems to be working fine except for that aspect ratio problem.
Anyway, the solution that I just found out is to change the aspect ratio to 16:9 under the preview window, then in the options panel (after of course, dragging the video to the timeline), the dropdown under the Resampling option, select "Keep aspect ration (no letterbox). That's what fixed it. I just want to work with the video now, but when I get a chance, I'm going to make a test video with my phone again in the portrait mode and duplicate the problem again just to make sure that's all there is to it. Of course it might have to be rotated in the options panel too. Thanks a lot for your help !!!

Well I was wrong. That didn't fix the problem. I tried it again with another video I accidentally filmed in portrait mode because my Samsung phone doesn't know the difference between 16:9 and 9:16. So back to the drawing board. I guess VS 2020 Pro doesn't know the difference either.
