Just to be clear, you don't create a proxy which is above 1920 x 1080. The point of having a proxy file is that it is a video format which is (usually) considerably less in its properties than your 4K originals. When the proxies (i.e. 'copies') are created, because they are either standard definition or some flavour of HD but less than 4K, they will be much easier to edit smoothly than 4K. So you do your edits using these proxy/copy files, and when you are ready to output a new video, the edits are then applied to the 4K originals. Tony is using 1440 x 1080, but you might even want to create a proxy template which uses, say, 1280 x 720...nahpungnome wrote:I also don't see an option for creating a smart proxy above 1920x1080.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
Maybe my 2019 version just doesn't work with 4k...Oh well. When you said 1440, I assumed 1440p, but yes I do see a 1440x1080 option. I tried various things, AVI template, MP4 template, hardware acceleration on and off, etc. It just starts to create the proxy file, but then just deletes it after a few seconds. Oh well, 4k files are humongous anyway.TonyP wrote:I've uninstalled VS2019 and only can report on VS2020.
In order to get proxies made of 4K, I had to lower in Preferences>Performance>Create proxy when the video size is above: 1920x1080 down to 1440x1080. The proxies were made in VS2020 and appeared in the proxy folder. If I left it at 1920x1080, nothing was created. If I remember correctly, there was a drop down menu in VS2019 too. Someone else would have to confirm though.
As for native 4K on the timeline, I can get decent but choppy response with the footage as long as I do not go crazy with fx, etc.
I am using an all AMD setup so have no hardware acceleration on.
To do multitrack editing, yeah, proxies are needed.
Nice system you have there!

While 4K files are large (unless HEVC), the image quality compared to HD is very visible. I edit on a 4K monitor and you can see the difference.
Creating proxies SHOULD work.
Someone else with 2019 will have to comment on 4K and proxies.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
Thanks, Ken. I understand the proxy file, but I just can't get them to create. I've tried template sizes from 1080P down to 720P. The proxy files get created fine for my 1080P video files and I see them in the folder. For my 4k file, when I create the proxy file, it starts to create the file based on the template I select, but then the file just disappears after a few seconds.Ken Berry wrote:Just to be clear, you don't create a proxy which is above 1920 x 1080. Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
I think I may have figured out the issue with my 4k files...it doesn't seem to like the All-I compression method. When I switched to IPB it seems to work fine.
Edit: I also tried downloading 2020 to see if it would solve my issue before I figured out that All-I was the issue and 2020 only gets me a black video with audio, but it doesn't lock up like 2019.

FWIW, I also have tons of problems with VS and videos recorded on my Panasonic. VS constantly crashes (silently). I came here hoping VS 2020 might have better m2ts support which VS seems to do a bad job of handling in my experience. I've already seen at least one post about the silently crashing so I'm guessing the answer is "it doesn't".pvreditor wrote:FWIW, I have LOTS of problems using video from my Panasonic cameras in VideoStudio. I have an HP computer with Windows 10, and I think there is an issue with the HP's firmware that interacts with the code in VideoStudio. I had no problem with a Dell computer using Windows 7, but I could not effectively edit video from my Panasonic cameras with VideoStudio on my HP computer. I switched to DaVinci Resolve and now also have Adobe Premiere. I still use VideoStudio, but I use the others, as well. Panasonic files do not automatically crash with Resolve and Premiere, but they still make VideoStudio unhappy. Just today, I brought a 4K Panasonic file directly onto the timeline in VideoStudio, and the program crashed immediately... gone without a trace.TonyP wrote:I have no problem with 4K footage shot with Panasonic cameras. Resolve and Premiere can crash, too, but much less often than VideoStudio. I've learned to save VERY frequently in every program I use.

I also work with MTS from a Panasonic 900 series camcorder
Opening projects created with older versions of video studio gives me a lot of problems.
Creating projects as new using 2020 appear easier to edit.
Yesterday I tested a 10 minute project (40 clips) created with X10, I was hoping some improvements after SP3
No complicated editing, simple trims, added two crossfades, one audio, program crashed - to many times to count
One time I was asked to restore the crashed project, that launched and immediately crashed.
I then created the project using 2020 from scratch, trimmed all clips, added the audio, no crashes so far.
I have to say that Corel have addressed some issues when working with MTS, I was having a lot of problems importing MTS especially one hour of video, just so slow, that has improved.
But fit project to timeline is very slow to refresh, again MP4 is quick
Using MP4 types and the program seems to fly compared to MTS files.
I did check out Pinnacle and that handles MTS, very fast to import and refresh timelines etc.
