4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
Surprise Surprise the unexpected hits you between the eyes....well..i say Unexpected...really! we're talking VS here...totally expected.
SO, you lucky people, I recorded 4k footage in my new camcorder...naturally..of course..VS has a hard time dealing with this, version 2018. I have RAM 32bits btw.
Any thoughts prey tell? and hows the Blu-ray feature going? I had it installed..then It went...now, naturally I would like it back again.
IS VS 2020 worth getting?
Answers on a postcard or rather a reply to this little thread.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
With 4K footage, you *must* use VideoStudio's SmartProxy feature in order to edit smoothly. Otherwise, the files are so big that the computer and software can't crunch all the bits fast enough.
First, turn on VideoStudio's SmartProxy feature. Once you've clicked that box, go to the library of files you want to work with and highlight all the video files. Do a right mouse click and click on "Create SmartProxy file...", then click on "OK". It will take a little time for your computer to create the proxy files, but you can start editing right away. As each proxy file is generated, editing will get easier and easier -- when they're all done, editing is a breeze.
I even create SmartProxy files when editing HD material, although I can generally get away without them if it is just simple editing. For 4K video, proxies (SmartProxy files) are a must.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
Thank phew for the reply Pvreditor, however, I have always found this amazing smart render solution ( often mentioned on here - for many other queries ) doesn't do anything to help wither switched on or off. My footage even standard stuff always misses frames ( in the editing process not once rendered but it makes it difficult to judge a transition effect when you playback and it 'drops frames' so to speak ).
SO - smartrender for me aint so smart...never was...never made a blind bit of difference to the smoothness of editing footage..talking years back as well. I recall in past, when I deleted a heap of footage from my PC..then that seemed to make a difference when editing...as though my PC couldn't cope .
I remain as always bambaffled.

pvreditor didn't say "SmartRender" -- he said "SmartProxy". They are two very different things.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
I can always rely on you to nitpick . I was overjoyed to see another 'reply' to the thread then realised it was your good self and though '#####' this is gonna be a complicated one again!!
Not that you are not helpful, and appreciate your replies..they never fail to lose me deeper down the rabbit hole lets say.
So..ok...10points for you...you caught me out howzat!! BUT..the difference aside...I clearly knew and meant SMARTPROXY...and that is the very setting I was on about and deem a curse.
SO - lets tread back a little..replace my work Smartrender ( ? ) with the word - SMARTPROXY and...and....we still aint got an answer have we. Still - cheers.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
You have to do more than just check the "SmartProxy" box for the SmartProxy feature to work. As I said in my post above:
"Once you've clicked that box, go to the library of files you want to work with and highlight all the video files. Do a right mouse click and click on "Create SmartProxy file...", then click on "OK". It will take a little time for your computer to create the proxy files, but you can start editing right away. As each proxy file is generated, editing will get easier and easier -- when they're all done, editing is a breeze."
Did you follow those steps, and give your computer a few minutes to generate the proxy files? Creating SmartProxy files is literally the only way to comfortably edit 4K video with VideoStudio, unless you have an ultra-high performance gaming computer.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
It might also be useful to create your own SmartProxy template e.g. for 4K video you might use a HD mp4 1920 x 1080 with a low bitrate. Using the built in template has been known to cause problems in 2019 and probably also in 2020. With the built-in template it seems that VS turns out a final video with the template properties rather than applying the edits to the 4K original...

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
I have no problem with 4K footage shot with Panasonic cameras. I've used up to 60P 4K.
Saying you have 32GB of RAM says nothing about the rest of your computer hardware. That "might" help knowing what you have exactly, not generalities.
See my profile to the right to see my computer specs.
Again, no problems with 4K.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
FWIW, I have LOTS of problems using video from my Panasonic cameras in VideoStudio. I have an HP computer with Windows 10, and I think there is an issue with the HP's firmware that interacts with the code in VideoStudio. I had no problem with a Dell computer using Windows 7, but I could not effectively edit video from my Panasonic cameras with VideoStudio on my HP computer. I switched to DaVinci Resolve and now also have Adobe Premiere. I still use VideoStudio, but I use the others, as well. Panasonic files do not automatically crash with Resolve and Premiere, but they still make VideoStudio unhappy. Just today, I brought a 4K Panasonic file directly onto the timeline in VideoStudio, and the program crashed immediately... gone without a trace.TonyP wrote:I have no problem with 4K footage shot with Panasonic cameras. Resolve and Premiere can crash, too, but much less often than VideoStudio. I've learned to save VERY frequently in every program I use.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
4K footage without having a powerful computer or proxies is difficult. And when you start adding effects, correcting, multiple tracks, it can slow your system down.
I tried Resolve with my "old" AMD 1700X and 16GB of RAM. I didn't find it very responsive when working with 4K at all. And it wasn't very stable, especially with the OFX plugins I have, at least for me.
Like others, I use various editors. Pinnacle Studio 23 Ultimate now has AMD graphics support and it is really quick. I also use Vegas Pro 17 Suite with full Boris Continuum 2020, Ignite Pro 4, NBFX Elements/Filters/Stylizers/Titler Pro, and a few Sapphire plugins for those editing situations where precise work is needed along with fx.
Each editor has something to offer me, so I have a toolbox of them and use the right tool for the right job. Obviously I am invested in OFX plugins and Vegas Pro. But VS has a compelling feature set and tools that make getting certain things done rather easy. Same with Pinnacle.
You have i7 listed, which model?
Panasonic 4K from what camera(s)?

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
Hello, I'm running into the same issue. 1080P video files from my Canon EOS R work great, however 4K does not work. I enabled all the smart proxy settings and right-clicked to create a proxy file on my 4k file, but it starts to create a file then disappears from my proxy folder. I tried to create a smart proxy file for my 1080P files and they work.
Any help much appreciated.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
I always use proxies when I edit, even HD video. It just makes editing smoother. That said, I usually use VideoStudio for simple stuff, such as bringing in a 4K clip and rendering it out as 720p to upload to Facebook. I don't do proxies for that.TonyP wrote:4K footage without having a powerful computer or proxies is difficult.

I think my i7 is a 6th generation. The computer is 4 years old.
I have four Panasonic cameras, although one of them (GH3) is dead. The others are a GH5, GX8 and ZS100. Video from all of them makes VideoStudio crash when I edit on my primary computer, which is an HP. It's no problem editing with them on my old Toshiba laptop or my old Dell desktop (both using VideoStudio of one vintage or another). There's something about the HP computer, VideoStudio and Panasonic files that causes crashing. I can edit all day with Canon, Nikon or Sony camera files without crashing, and I can edit Panasonic files in Resolve and Premiere all day without crashing.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
Hmmm... I have Proxies set up for anything over 1920x1080 going to a folder on another storage drive. I brought in some 4K 50P footage, so I would think proxies would automatically be created.
I go to my Proxy folder and see none. Curious.....
The thing is, it doesn't impact performance on my computer so I never noticed it.
I tried again with 4K50P and new project. I changed the proxy setting to anything over 1440, and the proxy files were being generated.
I double checked by quickly opening Multicam Editor, and yes, orange bar at the top of clips progressively turning green, meaning proxy files are being created.
Once all files in the MCE have green bar, you are good to go.

Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
Interesting, I have basically the same system specs as you do, but I can't get 4k to work for the life of me. I'm using Ultimate 2019 though. I also don't see an option for creating a smart proxy above 1920x1080. You mention 1440, which I don't even see an option for. Working with the 4k video directly basically locks up my app.TonyP wrote:Hmmm... I have Proxies set up for anything over 1920x1080 going to a folder on another storage drive. Re: 4K FOOTAGE - not..able..to...compute...
I've uninstalled VS2019 and only can report on VS2020.
In order to get proxies made of 4K, I had to lower in Preferences>Performance>Create proxy when the video size is above: 1920x1080 down to 1440x1080. The proxies were made in VS2020 and appeared in the proxy folder. If I left it at 1920x1080, nothing was created. If I remember correctly, there was a drop down menu in VS2019 too. Someone else would have to confirm though.
As for native 4K on the timeline, I can get decent but choppy response with the footage as long as I do not go crazy with fx, etc.
I am using an all AMD setup so have no hardware acceleration on.
To do multitrack editing, yeah, proxies are needed.
Nice system you have there!
