Burned SVCD plays choppy.

Post by Chesty LaRue »

I am using DVD Workshop v1 to make an SVCD. My sources are two uncompressed AVI files which I captured using different , but reliable, software. The files themselves play fine. I edited them into three chapters. The finished movie is maybe about 10 minutes long. On the finish page, the video previews fine. When I burn it to disk and play it in my DVD player, it turns out very choppy, audio and video. If I fast forwrd the video just a little, I notice that the video seems to go somewhat smoother and the audio sounds fine. I've tried changing the SVCD settings to every possible combination with no luck. What am I missing or doing wrong? This is my first step into the world of SVCDs, so please talk slow using as many small words as possible. Many thanks.

Have you tried a different make of player? Many don't like SVCDs, especially older ones.

Alternatively, I suggest you tell us more about your input files and the WS Project settings, the burner you are using, the hardware, OS etc.

Sorry, I should have added all this stuff in the first place. I have a Compaq machine with a Compaq CD-R/RW 4/4/24 burner made by Philips. It has an Athlon 500Mhz processor with 256MB ram. The windows HDD has a little over 1GB free and the WS working HDD has almost 8GB free. It runs Windows ME. The video files were captured from a digital camcorder though an IEEE 1394 firewire port. Like I said, I have tried changing all the WS settings, standard and legacy compliance, audio and video bit rates, standard high and low quality, etc. If there's a setting left to change, you'll have to be more specific because I couldn't find it. All of the options I changed are available on the "FINISH" page under "make disk", "burn disk image" or "SVCD options". My DVD player is a Panasonic and only a few years old, but I have noticed that it dosen't always like VCD's, but this is the first time trying it with SVCD's.I have an in-law with a Toshiba that's only a couple of months old. I'll try it there and post back. Thanks.

Sorry it took so long to post back. I tried playing these SVCD's on a newer model Toshiba and a older model JVC and Maganasonic with the same choppy results. What I did try that makes me scratch my head is to make the SVCD through Nero using their encoders, the downfall being I could not edit the video. What I got was a SVCD that plays fine at the start and about 45sec to a minute into it, it starts to go choppy, getting worse the longer it plays. When it comes to the next chapter, it plays fine and then gets choppy again with time. Duh?
