Is this a crash? Video Pro Studio X8

Post by Fishn3 »

Last night I was finishing up a project, adding the final video files and poof, Video Studio just vanished into thin air and was gone. This happened several times. I restarted my computer, came back later and restarted Video Studio Pro X8 and not only the files in the project I wanted to work on were corrupted and could not be found ( yellow box corner in the file ) but all the video files I had ever imported. I wonder it this is going to work again or I'll have the same problem. I have to check later. Has anyone else had this problem? I just uninstalled VS Ultimate 2019, it didn't work for me at all. I've been using the X8 for several years so this is very disappointing. I will be done with Corel forever if I can't get it back to normal. Any input appreciated, thanks...

Well I can't say this has ever happened to me, though pretty clearly it's a major problem for you if all the video clips you have ever imported into X8 seem to be corrupted. Can you import different clips? Do they have the yellow mark? I am also wondering if the clips were on an external hard drive which is either no longer connected or else has a different drive letter to what it was assigned originally.

Apart from an uninstall/reinstall, I wonder if you have thought about doing a reset of X8. For this you need to go to C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64) and rename the 18.0 folder to 18.0_OLD. Then restart X8. It will take its time rebuilding databases. But when it is fully opened see if your clips are no longer corrupt.

Thanks for the info. It wasn't on an external hard drive or from one. The files on my computer are fine so I will try importing again. Tough to lose a whole project though. Hopefully it was temporary and won't happen again, fingers crossed.

In your first post you said the files in your project were corrupted but now you say the files are fine? Which is it? Or are the files in your project just indicated as "missing"? You say you uninstalled Vs2019. Did you ever use it to try to work on your Vs8 project?

You should of course be saving your project often (to a different project name), especially for a long project

The video files on my computer are fine. It's just that all the files I imported which were over to the right in Video Studio have that yellow box. I did an experiment with just one video file color correcting and hitting the share button. Now I get the message that the file may be write protected and when I go to the folder where my projects were stored, it is now missing and I get another error message. It's late and I"ll have to write more tomorrow. I don't know what happened. All the video projects I created seem to be missing.

Hi
The program uses files as virtual clips in that the clips on the library or hard drive are simply thumbnails linked to the actual files on the hard drive
Move or change the files on the hard drive will cause the program to request a re-link, the clips showing a yellow marker
Go to F6 to check that Re-link Checking is selected, General tab is selected by default
Clicking any clip should then show a message to re-link

Share – may be write protected - this is a known issue, the message being a little confusing
The last File Location you use to save to has been removed, I get this after rendering to a USB stick, then removed the stick.
Please choose another File location.

Having the two errors, yellow clip markers and the Write Protect message seems to indicate that you have removed or moved some folders.
If you had 2019 installed and used folders within 2019 to hold or “save to”, uninstalling 2019 could be the problem.

Ok your clips with the yellow markers, are those within the library or on the timelines?
What do you see when you try to select those clips?
Project Files
When you worked with 2019 any projects used there will not open with the earlier X8 version

If you need to complete your projects started with 2019 then you should re-install the program to complete the projects
Otherwise you would have to start over again, I see no other option

Thank you, the clips with the markers are in the library. Somehow I created a new folder that still has my old projects by trying to use Movie Maker to open a short video I saved. The names show for the projects in the movie maker folder but of course won't play with it. It's a temporary solution but the video did save in that movie maker folder, so any future video I make could be saved there. (not the right fix I know). When I go to my old folder that held all my Corel Video X18 projects there is a box saying it no longer exists. Now I will have to see if I can get through a whole project with X18 without it disappearing as I edit. I never used 2019 for anything because it didn't work for me, I had this problem before I uninstalled it. It may be as simple as designating a new folder to save to but movie maker was an option as a window popped up for something to play the video and then when it played I was able to save it to that folder. I never moved anything, this all happened in the middle of editing when the project vanished while I was working multiple times. So this happened without my input. When I try selecting clips in the library that have that yellow marker, I get a half white half black frame that doesn't work.

Hi Thanks for the info
I had assumed you were using X8 as your post description, your latest reply shows 2018.

If you go to F6 Preferences is the option Relink Checking selected / ticked
When you select the black / white clip do you see a message to re-link, if no

Select the clip then go toe File – Relink, does that work?

I would say that you experienced a crash.

I had x8 on a Windows 7 laptop for several years, and the more I updated Windows, the more unstable VS x8 seemed to be. I then got assigned to teach an introductory evening class on VideoStudio, so I updated to VS2019. That seems much more stable than the last few times I tried to use x8.

Going by my experience and observations, my guess is that x8 is so old that continued updates to Windows has made it unstable. That's no more than a guess on my part, but I had x8 on two computers and it regularly crashed on both before I updated to VS2019.

Of course, as soon as I bought VS2019, Corel released VS2020... but that's a different story.

It probably was a crash files no longer exist and clips cannot be relinked is what I get. Fortunately I still have all the original video clips on my computer and will try to use the X8 again, but I'm not reassured from what happened. It worked great for about 3 years.

VS did not corrupt or delete your source files so I don't understand what you mean by "files no longer exist and clips cannot be relinked".
Like Trevor I am confused by what program you are actually using. At one point your mention X8 and then you mention X18 and VS 2019. You are confusing everybody!

Hi Fishn3
I assume not that you are using CVS2018 and not CVSX8--- Please confirm -- Help About for version number.
I asked in my last reply if you did get a relink request when selecting the clips, I assume clips in the library
If not then I would suspect the library is corrupt rather than a lost file?

If it is a library issue then you can try 2 things
Close the program
1 / Reset program by renaming the 21.0 folder from here
C:\Users\Trevor\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\21.0
A new 21.0 folder will be created when running the program
Does that help with the library
2 / Settings Library Manager – Reset Library this should set the library to its as installed condition

I assume you can locate your VSP files on your hard drive
If your project files fail to open then were they created using 2019
3 / please zip your VSP and attach to your post, anyone here with 2019 installed can open and “Save As” for 2018, returning the project file to you
Assuming that you are working with 2018.

It is possible that the project files are corrupt, and if so nothing we can do to fix that.

Finally if uninstalling 2019 has corrupted the 2018 program then you should re-install

I think I'm ok now, when it crashed all the library files were corrupted from all my projects. But I still have all the video clips on my computer intact, and the projects which were created. Somehow I've been able to save to a new project folder, and have been able to render at the end. These are short test projects though. So if it's working properly then I'll be able to get through a long project without a crash again. So far so good, if it happens again I'm done but it looks ok now.
