Video Studio 2020 Opinions

Post by NostalgiaNerd »

So what's the low down on the new 2020 Ultimate?

2019 was a horror show and if 2020 isn't any better then, I think it's time to say bye bye to VS. Which would be a shame, as it seemed to have so much potential, just a few years ago.

I've seen a few forum posts about closing and audio issues already, which doesn't bode well.

There's more.
If you have a display that has resolution larger than the minimum specified in the published system requirement page
ie
•Minimum display resolution: 1024 x 768
but less than 1920x1080 (the 1080 bit is the important one in this context), then you will have issues with oversizing of various panels used by the program.

For example, my system has a 1440x900 display that's been good for every VS version released for the last 9 years. But in my 23.0.1.391 VS2020 the settings/preferences panel is so big the bottom of the panel - and the OK button - is out of reach below the screen base. The panel can be dragged so the top of it is at top of screen, but no further, and the OK button is still unreachable, and no scroll bar. Any change you make to configure preferences in this situation fails, because the only way to exit the preferences panel is to X, which discards everything you just did. There are other similar panels throughout. I am advised that on a 1080 screen resolution (height) the OK button on the preferences panel is reachable, but I see no reason why I should have to buy a new screen just to use this version.

It's been reported to Corel. So, for now, 2020 is parked, unused, until SPxx whatever comes out and fixed this problem.

'Great' start then.

I was hoping they would "correct their wrongs" with this version. But that doesn't seem to be the case so far.

I'll keep my eyes out for updates on the Service Pack, but PowerDirector is looking mighty appealing.

Power Director is more stable than VS and some things are better,ie, clip movement, 360 editing. PD has nothing that equals Customize Motion in VS. However, VS is far more user friendly with a lot less bloat. If they would kill the numerous bugs it would be the best in its class. If this continues however, it's the end of VS and that is a shame.

I switched to Cyberlink Powerdirector like many of you tired of VS bugs not fixed. Moreover, the customer service for VS is extremely bad.

"Thou shall not serve two masters." Pinnacle Studio and Videostudio. Looks like they want to dump VS in favor of Pinnacle. I do not know if Pinnacle is as buggy as VS? Can anyone address this issue?.

I thought that it was only me struggling with this version. I wondered if it was my new PC that have problems when I upgraded to VS2019, or the upgraded version itself. So I've downloaded the trial first en tried that. Initially it went well. I mixed a project with two video layers but later when I opened it to continue, the sound of the two layer is mixed though I only use one video soundtrack with the other one muted. Now, I discovered a new error, I cannot cut the video layer it gives me an Improper argument!

Yes I agree that the 2019 version was a total failure. I started trying other recommended software, but I find it quite difficult to operate, even when the look more or less the same it is not that easy especially if you have to complete a new project. I hope Corel can fix the problems with a proper patch.

I too hope that Corel fixes the problems with VS2020. It's a great product.
As to the Pinnacle/VSP and Corel wants to dump VS, I don't think so. They wouldn't be investing all the time and money on it if they want to end it.
As for bugs in Pinnacle, yeah, they are there. Just as they are there with Resolve, Vegas Pro, Adobe, etc.... heck, I own Boris Continuum Complete 2020 for Vegas Pro, stop by the Boris forum and see bugs listed.
The question is, are the bugs total show stoppers.
In Pinnacle land, if you edit MTS files, you will have sync issues, which Pinnacle is working on and should have something out soon. I haven't edited with MTS in years, so this doesn't affect me.
