Hi all,
I just installed VideoStudio 9 the other day. I am a first time VideoStudio user. I have a 3.4GB MPEG2 file that I am trying to make a DVD-R with. I have the file loaded into VS9 in the VideoStudio Editor. I startup the Create Disc portion of the program. I told it not to create any menus. The program freezes on the screen where you put in the information for Disc Volume Label, Create DVD folders, Create disc image file, etc.
The program will not shut down, even when Ending the Task in the Task Manager. Windows itself will not shutdown all the way. I have to hit the physical reset switch.
I think the program may not be seeing my DVD+/-RW drive (just a theory).
I am having trouble with the program freezing during the capturing portion of the program too. I also don't think it sees my capturing board (Hauppauge PVR-250) I can end task out of that problem though. My primary concern though is the disc burning problem.
My system has:
Asus A7N8X Rev. 2.0 Deluxe
AMD Athlon 2800+
1GB Total of 2 Corsair 512MB CMX512-3200LL Dual Channel DDR SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB AGP
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Hauppauge PVR-250
Sony DVD+/-RW DRU-500A
AOPEN DVD1648 DVD-ROM
Windows XP SP2 - All Critical Updates loaded
I have downloaded and installed the patch for VS9. I also download and installed the latest Hauppauge support software for VS9 as well as the latest burning support software for VS9.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

Just on the burning problem if you read the sticky note at the head of the forum you will find the answer to the question. It is well worth reading. Never try to burn a disc with anything in the editing timeline. It "should" do it, it "says" it can do it...but it usually turns out bad!
Open VS9 and go straight to the Share tab with nothing in the timeline. Then go to create disc and add the MPEG2 file there. But read that note first as it will explain about how to handle the properties of the file and the properties of the burning process so that you get a good result.
Oh, almost forgot. Make sure that you don't have any other DVD or CD type programs running that would take control of the burner as soon as you insert a disc. Two example are Nero InCD and Roxio Drag to Disc. In the case of Nero you need to uninstall and for Roxio you should be able to shut it down from the tray icon.

Ok I see nothing unusual about that so unless someone else comes on to give an answer I would suggest two possible things to try to get around this.
1. Shut all programs down and go to Start/run/ type msconfig and hit ok.
Choose "selective start up" and de-select "load start up item. Click ok then reboot. Then try to create the disc again following the recommended procedure. I say this because there is a possibiblty of a conflict that is causing the freeze.
2. If the above doesn't work go back into msconfig and put the start up back to normal and reboot. Then, if you have the VS9 install disc put it in the CD DVD tray and run the repair option from the Add/Remove folder in the Control Panel. Then try to create the disc.

OK, I have spent way too much time on this.
First off, the Ulead uninstall procedure is terrible. Trying to fix the problem, I uninstalled the program, restarted the computer, and reinstalled the program. After this, the program crashed almost immediately, every time!
So, I uninstalled the program again. I cleaned the registry of all obvious Ulead Videostudio entries. My goodness, there must have been a 100 entries, even after an uninstall. And, I am only counting those that were obviously from VideoStudio, based on filenames (which were about 99% of the entries).
I restarted. I created a restore point. I installed the program again. The program runs without crashing. Cool. I try to go to the screen where the program froze on me before. That doesn't freeze anymore. Great! I close VS9. I create another restore point. I then install the Hauppauge update (found on this page: http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm ) and the CD/DVD Burning Pack (found on this page: http://www.ulead.com/tech/general/burning_patch.htm ). I start up VS9. It still starts up normal. I try going to the screen that froze on me in the past. It freezes again! Oh no!
So, I do a hard reset. I restore to the restore point before installing the Hauppauge and CD/DVD Burning Pack. I then install the Hauppauge update only. I try the program again. It loads without crashing and the screen that froze on me does NOT freeze. Okay then, there is something wrong with the CD/DVD Burning Pack update.
So, I create another restore point. I then try installing the VideoStudio 9 Update Pack (found on this page: http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm ). I run the program. It starts fine without crashing. I go to the screen where it was freezing. Guess what? It freezes on me again!
Alright, I do another hard reset. I go to the restore point before installing the VideoStudio 9 Update Pack. I start up VS9 again. It runs fine and the screen is not freezing. So, there must be something wrong with both the CD/DVD Burning Pack AND the VideoStudio 9 Update Pack!
I feel like I should be paid by Ulead for testing their products. This is ridiculous. I hope I don't run into any more problems!
And Ulead, create a better uninstall program! The one in the program is terrible. It doesn't take out a huge number of entries in the registry! I have never seen one as bad as this uninstall program!

I think a lot of us here have gone through similar experiences eradicating VS references in the Registry in order to do a completely clean reinstall. I also totally sympathise with your frustration.
But I guess it confirms something else I have been thinking about for a while now, and that is that unless there is a particular reason to do so, the update packs should not be loaded. My version of VS 9 seems to be working just fine and I have downloaded the update packs, but just to have them on hand in case something does go wrong which the updates might (just might) fix. But otherwise, I am a believer in 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'!!
