Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
Dear all,
I've just upgraded my PaintShop Pro 2018 to the new 2020 version.
I have the following problem when trying to open a .tiff picture.
This is what I get with PSP 2018
http://www.sergebonfond.be/images/stori ... SP2018.jpg
And what I get with PSP 2020 !
http://www.sergebonfond.be/images/stori ... SP2020.jpg
I'm working with Paint Shop Pro for more than 20 years and I never experienced that kind of problem before.
Can somebody help me to solve that issue ?
Many thanks in advance.
Serge.

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
Welcome to the forum.
Could you perhaps make the .tiff file available to us via Dropbox or something similar so we can test it? I ask since I have no problems opening .tiff files in PSP 2020.

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
Does this happen with only this tiff file or with all tiff files.
Also can you load it in PSP 2018 and save it as a tiff under a different name and then see if that loads correctly into PSP 2020
An additional test-
Open both PSP 20118 and 2020. Make 2018 active and load the image, then drag the image down to the PSP 2020 tab in the task bar and hover there til PSP 2020 opens then drag and drop into the PSP 2020 workspace. Does it change / give a warning message ...?

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
Dear Ken and Hardpaul,
First Thanks a lot for your reply.
I tried with multiple .tiff files with the same result.
It has also to be noted that the "raw lab" is automatically opening at each .tiff opening. This is not happening with a .jpeg file.
I will try your additional test as soon as possible, and revert to you with the result.

I opened both PSP 2018 and PSP 2020
Then I loaded my .tiff picture with PSP 2018, then copied and pasted it as a new image in PSP 2020 without any problem and/or any message.
Then I saved it again under a new name.
The further loading of the picture (with PSP 2020) has been done without problem, BUT !!! it has been automatically compressed in "LZW" mode.
The original picture had been saved without compression.
So... is the compression mode or the "non" compression of a .tiff picture can be a problem with PSP 2020 ???
Many thanks for your feedback.

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
I did exactly the same, though using PSP 2019 instead of 2018, which I don't have on this computer. And the Copy/Paste As New Image in 2020 worked well. But like goodbottom the image was set to use LZW compression. I wasn't sure about that so in Options under Save As I changed this to Uncompressed as this matched the EXIF information in the original in 2019. Again the image saved just fine...
However, when I closed the new image in 2020 and tried to reopen it, I got the original problem back again, with image appearing in skeletal form in Camera RAW Lab. So evidently PSP 2020 must have some sort of problem with uncompressed tiffs...

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
TIFF is the file format that some manufacturers use to store their RAW data in. So PSP is trying to determine if the TIFF is RAW or not and is making the wrong choice as evidenced by opening it in RAW lab. We've seen this for years. There's always someone that has this problem eventually.
This makes me curious, is compression really the only distinguisher PSP uses to determine RAW from regular?
EDIT: Interesting, it contains tags for PSP and your edit history. You'd think these would be dead give-aways that this file isn't in RAW format. So I'm guessing PSP's TIFF reader doesn't look for those things. Wonder if it's a licensed 3rd party library or something they made themselves.

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
The file opens as expected in my PSP X9, PSP 2018 and PSP 2019.
It doesn't in PSP 2020 (opens as RAW). My conclusion: it is broken in PSP 2020.

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
I agree with jean-Luc.
I opened the original (A) in Irfanview - all normal. Then saved with no compression in Irfanview (B) , and then again with LZW compression (C).
Opening in PSP 2019-
A,B,C all opened correctly
Opening in PSP 2020
A failed , B and C were correct.
Saving as an uncompressed tif ffrom PSP 2019 that file fails in PSP2020 as well. So yes a bug in PSP 2020 recognising uncompressed tif files.

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
I loaded the file in my PSP 2020 32bit French v. 22.2.0.8 and get this error message and a crash (vanished) after a few seconds: I started again and the file loaded as RAW.LeviFiction wrote:Entertainingly, the original opened in PSP2020 just fine for me.
I cannot reproduce the crash.
I switched to the English version and the file loaded as RAW.
The file opens as expected in AfterShot 3 Standard and DXO Optics Pro 9.

Ah, hadn't thought about the version #. My work computer is still on 22.1 My home laptop is on 22.2 and the tiff image opens in 22.1 but acts like a RAW file in 22.2.

Re: Problem when opening .tiff files with PSP 2020
So the problem seems to be definitely linked to the compression mode of a .tiff picture.
Now it's a real problem from my side as all my .tiff pictures have been initially save "uncompressed" !!!
At least I know how to bypass the problem with my previous version PSP 2018.
I hope the actual version will be updated soon to correct that bug.
Many thanks again for your multiple feedback's
Serge.
