Depends on the player you are using, where manufacturers have there opinion what the stock player should play.
I use the Poweramp app, and it plays any format 8)

Why my android 8 phone won't play .wma is a mystery. It took me a while to find the initial cause, which is simply that even tho the wma file(s) are in the device memory, choose music and they simply are not displayed: and not being displayed, cannot be selected/played. I got around this by converting wma to mp3 and all is fixed.

I didn't try placing the WMA file into my phone's memory I copied it to my (phone's) micro SD card. Anyway when I check the specs of my phone it states that it can access WMA (as well as MP3). I have found since ceating this thread that WMA files are noticably smaller than MP3 so take up less 'space'. Not sure if they sound as good but I only use ear 'buds' which probably wouldn't show any difference. I DID notice though that the name displayed by my phone is not what I expect and maybe this is why you can't 'see' the file. Try copying the WMA to a (micro) SD card (placing it in the MUSIC folder and then have a look. MP3 files contain a lot of data such as 'name of tune', 'artist', album name etc etc and maybe WMA don't which might be the reason I don't 'see' my WMA file listed as I would expect. ALSO I use 'Google Play' to play sound files on my (Android) phone.
