So the smart proxy bug where the final video renders the smart proxy instead of the source file is still present in VS 2020. For example zooming a 4K movie the proxy will be blurry (as expected) and then the final version will also be blurry. Disable smart proxy and then render and finally product is clear.
So much for it only used for editing. Not a big deal but people not aware and wondering why their final 4K output is less quality than they expected this bug still exist.

So, you purchased the download version of Vs2020 in the last few days. Can you advise what the version number is - in the installed program, select Help, About and advise the number sequence you see there?

Re: VS 2020 Smart Proxy bug still present
sure no problem. the version number is 23.0.1.391
another odd thing is if you set the proxy to the recommended auto template it creates a .upx file that is not only very low resolution it actually is a much larger file than using your on template of 1920x1080 mpeg-4 15000kb. The default proxy made a file that was 79mb big while the custom template made a 39mb file and was much clearer.
the rendering output issue using the proxy and not the source file was done with the recommended proxy (everything default) to avoid user error.

Yes, that file size difference is an oddity. Usually, the proxy file - upx - is smaller, because it's a standard definition version of the HD original. But not always - I've had one occasion when the upx file was 3+gb for a 2gb HD clip. So odd that I ran it twice - same result both times. However, it edited Ok and the rendered version was normal.

Re: VS 2020 Smart Proxy bug still present
Ok and now for the really weird part. So I did some testing and have found or at least believe I’ve found (still need to test a bit more) that smart proxy indeed does work. However you have to make your own template and use mpeg-4 (maybe others work too but I used mpeg 4). I made a very low bit rate 1920x1080 and then zoomed in until pixelated and blurry and then rendered it to 4K (source was 4K) and it was clear.
So I’m not sure what they are using in the upx if you just enable the default recommendation of auto but it is bugged. Makes a much larger file, extremely blurry (and somewhat of a flickering on some textures) and most importantly it doesn’t fall back to the source file for final rendering. It’s been like that with two versions of video studio and two entirely different pc’s.
So at least now I’ve found a way to make it work for me.
smart proxy indeed does work... make your own template and use mpeg-4... bit rate 1920x1080
Thanks for the tip. I set this up. Brought a 1414.256 Mb file to 114.537 Mb Proxy file. The source is 4k from drone footage.
You would think this would edit fine with such a drastic reduction in temp file size but my application crashes on any editing. Can't even preview file.
Any tips on how to actually get VS to edit 4k vids?

Re: VS 2020 Smart Proxy bug still present
Maybe you have to go lower than 1920x1080? My systems pretty powerful so it can edit 1920x1080 with no problems it only 4K that’s still too much. So at least for me I know the 1920x1080 mpeg4 proxy is working because it’s smooth playback. The default upx proxy also plays back smooth but is much bigger file size, more pixelated and also has the bug where the rendered video mimics the proxy and not the source (meaning it actually renders in the pixelation)lata wrote:Thanks for the tip. Re: VS 2020 Smart Proxy bug still present
Ordinarily, editing 4K video would absolutely require use of smart proxy. But you say a smart proxy bug persist into 2020. Can you clarify that??
Regarding the clip, not every HD clip is compatible, some for what might appear to be odd reasons. Perhaps you should post a screenshot of the (original) clip properties, and explain just what your smart proxy workflow is???
