Trying to use the "white balance" function

Post by Trebly »

Hi,

PSP2019

I try to use the "white balance function" with advanced options and first to understand the panel.

The case :used very important corrections to perform : fixed temp 2900K used while photographing mountains in winter with large spaces of snow when sun is low in horizon - large space with no direct light while others are shining by reflexion - the result is a rather dark blue image... (note : the images has been directly produced in jpeg, so the RAW image tools from CANON (and other products) cannot be used.

Comparing to other products it seems that here, can be used three main options for this purpose:

1- Click on a white zone (or grey) known into the original image, then the function will calculate the corrections (see further : this seems to lead to a failure). This is the way used in Videostudio 20219 ultimate : just click a known white zone (the problem is to set the surface of the zone for average mesure), the result is good (used for a video done with the same error than the photo to modify).
2- Optimize with average mesure (can function only if the original average is white) and validate to execute
3- Set color temp before (the temp used to get the photo) ; set the new temp whished and validate to execute (this is the case when two temperature can be asked for.

What I have checked (no intelligible relation with the French documentation) of the actions proposed and tested the effect produced
1- after checking advanced option and using default parameters, When I point a white reference element of the image a get a sub-panel which gives the information [Temp : invalid ; Color : invalid ; R:67 ; V :122 ; B : 202]. But No idea what to do with this : the preview gives a more enhanced blued image.
2- After we can find "Sélection optimale (in French)" this means may be "optimal selection" which mean nothing for me the concept is not documented. At the right (I must describe the screen because there is no possibility to join the screen copy - quite difficult to speak about photography without showing them) we can read (translation to English from French :
<optional : click on one object, black, white or grey into the sub-window Preview to select a reference color> this seems to comment the button <optimal selection> which has no effect
3- New line of text :
Optional : proceed to fine tune of temperature and color (I tell : of what ?), In fact this temp seem to go to warmer result if temp is higher (note : at the maximum of 9500°K the image remains blue dominant)
Next block : "optimize the white balance (set to obtain de wished result)" : I tell may be because previously the purpose of the action was not to obtain the wished result. Using 7500°K I get an image where the white snow is a little too warm.
Note : If I run the function "optimal treatment" I get a rather blued image which doesn't correspond at all at what I have in my memory.

I can only describe an experience. What I don't understand is that I am no able to perform with PaintShop Pro what I can do for a full video in one click with Videostudio.

Sorry for this long description but to treat about screen contents and photo contents by text lead to write a novel.

Do somebody knows how to use this function for which the text in user manual is not understandable (summarizes, don't explain option and missing elements : shorter than the panel...) ?

Best regards

I find it much easier to do my major RAW Color Corrections in Canon Digital Photo Pro first, then save as JPG. Minor JPG color balancing in PSP is last, if needed at all.

The white balance is not easy to understand.
If you read French, see this topic:
