VideoStudio X9 all hell broke loose suddenly

Post by althetrainer »

I have been a VideoStudio user since X4. I bought X9 back in 2016 to use with my Windows 10 PC, never had any problems with it until just now.

I took a 2-month break due to a busy schedule. Tried editing a short video today, the program kept crashing. Checked Windows 10, it was up-to-date. No matter what I did, the program would crash every 30 - 60 seconds. My last resort was to uninstall it completely then reinstall X9. After re-installation, the program crashed less often but it began to act weird. Something went very wrong with the editing window, things like audio and video completely out of sync for one video, then a black frame around a second video making it 1/4 of the regular size, a third one got so distorted that I couldn't even see the contents. The last one I tried, the video played in the editing window was choppy yet audio was completely fine. I am afraid to try another one for I might get a fifth problem.

I have used X9 for almost 4 years but I can't figure out what's going on. Could it be software being too old and no longer supported by Corel?

It's difficult to answer, but one point to start is "Checked Windows 10, it was up-to-date"
As you tell, X9 worked fine (or less shaky) as long as W10 wasn't up-to-date.
And yes X9 is no longer supported by Corel. Corel's philosophy is one year per SW version, after that the users can go to hell.

That's unfortunate. I actually like the older versions better. In fact, among all different versions that I've tried X4 being the most stable. It took me a while to get used to X9 and now it's a goner as well. I really should start learning Pinnacle Studio 23. Bought it last year but procrastination got the best of me. If I want to find fault with Pinnacle, it has some very unorganized tutorials that are difficult to follow.

PS23 is totally different than VS, I would not advice to go there from VS. I had PS15,19 and 22... removed them all after awhile as never being used.
But it's all depend on the type of video's you do and your general NLE editing knowledge.

Hi
I have X9 installed on Windows 10 and have no problems in running that although generally as a test bed
Just imported MTS and Mpeg4 to the timelines with no issues, seems to work ok and fast enough to refresh the timelines
If you were ok using in the past have you made any changes on the pc?

1 / When you re-installed the program did you first delete / rename the folder 19.0 from here
C:\Users\Trevor\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)
This folder is used as a reset for the program, a new folder will be created when launching the program
Uninstalling via Program and Features will prompt to remove personal settings, it is this folder that is removed.

2 / Instant Projects
If you have used those and added your own templates a corrupt template could cause problems
Rename this folder, if it exists.
C:\Users\Trevor\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\VSPTemplate

3 / Program updates
The latest version afaik is 19.7.0.12
The latest update is only available by download and does not install through the programs Check for Updates
Not sure what changes that delivers.

A bit late now that my hair is wet. I totally agree going from VS to Pinnacle was like moving to a foreign country. Thought I wanted to try something different but never had the time to dive into it. If VS X9 is a goner I will have no choice but to give PS23 a go. Maybe this is the kick I need to get myself going.

I had the initial hiccups when I first got X9 but once I got the little things ironed out it was a smooth running. I don't use it for anything longer than 15 minutes, most of my videos are short tutorials. Haven't made any changes on the PC other than putting in a SSD last year. Pretty sure it was not the problem because editing was trouble free for the entire year after the modification.

1 / When you re-installed the program did you first delete / rename the folder 19.0 from here
C:\Users\Trevor\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)

Uninstalling via Program and Features will prompt to remove personal settings, it is this folder that is removed.

When I uninstalled I did choose to remove personal settings but I didn't remove the 19.0 folder manually. Should it be the problem, I can always uninstall then re-install a second time.

2 / Instant Projects
If you have used those and added your own templates a corrupt template could cause problems
Rename this folder, if it exists.
C:\Users\Trevor\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\VSPTemplate

I never used instant projects, don't think I have any templates there. Will check just to make sure thought.

3 / Program updates

The latest update is only available by download and does not install through the programs Check for Updates
Not sure what changes that delivers.

Now this could be a big one. I did contact and ask Corel for an update link but their representatives (yes, talked to three of them), none was too keen on assisting me but chose to have someone to call me back (which never happened). The question is, wouldn't the re-installation bring on the latest update thought?

The latest version of X9.5 is 19.7.0.12 but you have to apply the SP that updates it to X9.5 which I think is SP3 and SP4 then apply SP5 which is an update to X9.5.

For Video Studio updates view this post, refer to X9
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58892

As far as I know re-installing CVSX9 will give you the X9.5 version, if not a Check for updates will do that

The last update SP 5 afaik does not auto install and has to be manually downloaded and installed.

Just on this point, I have checked our Sent mail folder and found 4 emails addressed to you since 28 January. Maybe they ended up in your spam folder, but notifications were sent..

Thanks for checking for me. Notifications seem to come through this morning without problems. Shaw does strange things from time to time.

Thanks again. I managed to update SP5. Just tested editing briefly... no more shutting down every 30 seconds (though test time was less than 5 minutes in total). On the other hand, some of the "problematic" videos are still acting up in edit but I found a temporary solution for this. I ran the videos in questions through Handbrake, saved them as new files then edited them using CVSX9, seemed to work. It's a PITA but until I get a hang of Pinnacle 23 this is what I am going to do to keep thing moving.

Just want to say one thing, you guys are awesome!
