Paintshop Pro 2020 64 bit strange icons

Post by Oz Rod »

Thank you for letting me join.
I bought PSP 2020, but have an issue when it opens. The top toolbar should read "file edit image" etc, but all I get are strange icon type things.

Corel support have been good recommending things to try but I am not sure they understand what I am telling them. Other windows like "open" have the strange icons.

I hope someone on your forum might have a solution.

Have you tried resetting the program: with PSP closed, hold down the Shift key and click the desktop PSP icon to open it. You should then get a message asking if you want to reset the program. Say yes, and hopefully when it opens, things will be restored to what they should be.

Thanks Ken. I held down shift & double clicked. I got this window to open. Same crazy looking symbols. I clicked where the arrow points & it opened up PSP but
the same problem exists.

Are you using Windows 7? Win 7 is no longer supported by MS. PSP 2020 more than likely is optimized to work in a Windows 10 environment.

Thank you InkadinkaDo & Kathy_9. I do run Windows 7 but currently Corel have been trying to help me. I am not sure that they understand what my problem is
but they haven't suggested my problem is because of Win 7. I like Win 7 & don't like Win 10 so want PSP to work on my desktop PC. They give me things to try but some of them
are go to file preferences etc, but I just come across strange icons as per my enclosed photos.

I, too, liked Win-7 and considered moving to Win-10 to be a downgrade, but I did it because I could do it for free. Win-10 runs all of the apps that ran on Win-7. I have PSP4-8, PSPXI, PSPx4, PSPx6-x9 and PSP 2018 installed. They all run in Win-10. For a time my homenet could not see my wireless printer, but that is fixed now, presumably from a silent update. All in all, I would say that downgrading from Win-7 to Win-10 was not a bad move.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

For what it's worth, I successfully ran PSP2020 on my old Windows 7 computer before buying a new computer with Windows 10 and there are others on the forum with Windows 7 using PSP2020.

Have you tried uninstalling, running the cleanup tool and re-installing from a fresh download?

I think there is some corruption in the machine because the icons have disappeared.

Have you tried creating a new Windows profile/account and then try running VS from that new account. If this doesn't work then you can delete the new account you created to test this.

Thank you for your replies. I have uninstalled reinstalled a couple of times with no result. It's nice to know that PSP 2020 should work ok with Win 7.
Xfsgpr what does "VS" refer to in your reply.?
Corel have been helping me with options to try, no good outcome yet.

Thanks again
Rod.

I think he meant to say PSP and not VS -- which stands for Video Studio, which is PSP's sister application for video.

Thanks Xfsgpr I created a new user acoount & then tried to open PSP but just got the strange window again. The window says Paintshop Pro at the top and has the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside the triangle. I posted that window previously in my replies. I clicked on the bottom left icon but it didn't even open the program.

Have you downloaded a new copy of the installation files and then tried those? (maybe your original download was partially corrupted )

Also do you have access to another computr that you can try and install the program on.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Thanks hartpaul. I did get it to work properly on my laptop that has windows 10. I like to work on my desktop PC that has win 7.
I could load Win 10 onto desktop but I don't like Win 10.
I have downloaded different copies of the installation files with the same result.

Corel support have been good and are trying to ring me but there is the time difference between me in Australia & Corel in India.

PSP works perfectly with W7. what is the locale of your computer, have you changed the scaling or default font of your desktop?
