Touble with 16:9 Menu Templates in VideoStudio 9

Post by viji »

I am having some trouble with menu templates during the "Create Disc" phase with VideoStudio9.

After adding a set of video files (all 16:9) with the "Add Video" option, when I click the "Next" button to go to the step where you edit the menus, pick a template etc., an error message box that says "Failed to Load Template File" appears. After clicking "OK" in that box several times, it goes away. However, I don't see all the templates that have been uploaded under the "Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0\Template" folder. In addition to the default set of templates that comes with the installation, I had also uploaded the 16:9 version of the Olympic DVD Menu Templates that I found here: http://www.ulead.com/download/freegoodi ... mplate.htm. I followed the instructions given there to install the templates and put them under a folder titled "Sports". These templates don't appear at all in the "Menu Template" drop down list.

An another thing that I noticed is that after installing the bonus templates that are available through the "Smart Download" option, the bonus templates appear only for 4:3 aspect ratio. Is this not availbale for 16:9? Otherwise, you are left with a very spartan set of templates to choose from when creating 16:9 DVDs.

Thanks for any help.

Hi viji

VS 9 uses two sets of templates, one for 16:9 and the other believe it or not for 4:3.
There is about 50% more templates for 4:3 than 16:9.

Before you access ‘Share Create Disc’ make sure that your project settings are the same as your video clips.
The easiest way is to start a new project, insert one of your clips, then remove the clip by deleting,
Video Studio has changed the project properties to match the video properties.

You now have an empty timeline.
When you go to Share Create Disc-Add video, your menu options will be 16:9.

Using 16:9 I see a TOTAL of 20 menu templates.
How many do you see.????

As for the Olympic Templates, remove them for the time being, you may have copied them to the wrong location, I don’t know.

But you should be able to place them in your Favourites Folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\Ulead VideoStudio\9.0\My Favorites\

Hope this Helps

I understand that VideoStudio uses different sets of templates for 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios.
I was wondering why the bonus templates that are made available through the "Smart Download" option are available only in 4:3 aspect ratio and not for 16:9.
Using 16:9 I see a TOTAL of 20 menu templates.

All my video clips are 16:9. I have made sure that the project properties are set to match that of the video clips added to the project. I have made sure by checking the "Project Settings" properties in the window that appears when you click the gear shaped icon found at the lower left of the "Create Disc" window.

With the 16:9 settings, I see only 5 templates.
One each in the following five categories.
1. Classic
2. Holiday
3. Milestone
4. Speed
5. Travel.

That's it!

I am surprised that you have 20 templates available for 16:9 in your copy of VideoStudio 9.
Did you have to install the bonus templates to get those or did you have that many after installing the "plain vanilla" version of VideoStudio9?

I completely uninstalled VideoStudio 9 and re-installed it from the CD. It is still the same. Also, an annoying "Failed to load template file" message box appears when I go to the step where you choose the templates. And, I have to click it several time before it disappers.

I hope someone here in this forum has seen a similar problem and remedied it.

Thanks,
Viji

Hi viji

My version of VS 9 is the full version, it was a download and came in one file 680 Mb.
I do not need the extra contents package as all is included in the one file.

When you look at this folder how many ufo files do you see.

C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0\Template\16_9\Classic

I see five, these should be available in the create menu stage.
For the 4:3\ Classic I see Six.

The INDEO driver has been known to give trouble seeing all the templates/transitions in the libraries.

Install the Indeo driver again.
The install shield should give you the option to install drivers

This is all news to me!
First of all, the version of VideoStudio9 that I installed was only a 180 MByte executable. I purchased the software online. Subsequently, they mailed me a version on the CD as well. That was merely a copy of the executable that I had downloaded online.

C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0\Template\16_9\Classic

I see five, these should be available in the create menu stage.
For the 4:3\ Classic I see Six.
I see exactly one template under the "Template\16_9\Classic" folder.
The "Template\4_3\Classic" also has exactly one.

The INDEO driver has been known to give trouble seeing all the templates/transitions in the libraries.

Install the Indeo driver again.
The install shield should give you the option to install drivers
Again, this is news to me.
When I installed the software, there was no option to install the drivers etc. at all. I guess I will have to complain to Ulead and figure out what they sent me.

Thanks for all the clarifications.

Hi viji

The normal distribution for video studio has been using two files at least for the last three versions.
The first contained the program itself. About 200 mb
The second was extra content. About 600 mb
You can download or get the boxed version, I would always recommend the boxed version.
Extra contents:-
Using version 7:- running the extra content folder automatically installed all the templates required.
Version 8 as far as I know required a manual install, that is all the templates had to be copied and pasted to there relevant folders.

Version 9---I do not know which options ulead have used to install the extra contents files, automatic or manual.

Templates:-

If you are only seeing one (1) template ( ufo ) file in each folder then you have not installed the extra contents files.

Indeo Driver. (see the 'read me file' from the ulead install shield)
This driver should be auto installed during the program installation, If for some reason it is not then you will have trouble viewing the libraries and templates.

I do not think you have problems with this driver as you now indicate that the ufo files do not exist in the templates folders.

Have you used the ‘Smart Download’ to get the 750 Mb of extra content files from Ulead.

Can someone clarify if the smart download extra contents auto install or is it a manual function?

Hi Trevor,

I downloaded the VS9 upgrade, and also took the Back-up CD option similar to viji. The CD is a copy of the core program only, as viji says. The smart download provided another 700Mb (almost).. of additional content including plugins for Cool 3D.. and some Full Spectrum Audio add ons. These are in the form of Self Extractors which need to be executed to get them to integrate with the core program. I seem to remember that these transmitted as zipfiles for the download, but can't be sure. The Cool 3D content required manual placement to the options menu, but the rest integrated automatically.. I seem to be one of the few who successfully downloaded and registered the upgrade (VS7SE already on board) and the extra content without experiencing any significant problems.. I also backed up the core program and all the extra content Self extractors to a CD for extra security... because you only get one shot with Smart Download. I haven't used 16:9 templates as this feature seems to be a mask rather than re-sizing the frame at the 16:9 aspect ratio for original 4:3 video.. That is, you lose some of the picture info at the top and bottom, so it is better to allow my widescreen TV to sort this out, accept some distortion and stick with the original 4:3. However, when the original video is shot at 16:9, then this is different of course... and you would want to produce your final video in the same format. As I haven't been able to do that, I can't say that I have experienced the same problem as viji, but my experiment with 4:3 converting to 16:9 did not produce the error... just the letterbox shaped picture with some loss of data top and bottom..

The Template folders.. eg Classic, 4:3 = 6, and 16:9 = 5

Hope this helps

After installing all the Content Packs (1-4), I am now able to see the additional templates for 16:9 and the "Failed to load template file" error that I mentioned about has also disappeared. Thanks for the tips.

Hopefully, Ulead will extend full support for 16:9 in the near future and make all 4:3 features available for 16:9 as well. When I posted this probem to their technical support, I got a lame response as follows:

"I'm sorry that VideoStudio don't support 16:9 or widescreen format for DVD menu. Please be informed that features of VideoStudio are based from the users demands, suggestions for the software that we gathered from user's inquiries, forums and other sites from the internet. I know this widescreen feature for the DVD menu is new and also rarely seen in most commercial DVDs. I know our related department will consider this feature in the future versions of VideoStudio. However, these feature is not a limitation in the DVD Moviefactory 4, our more advanced entry level DVD authoring program." - Ulead Technical Support

Hi viji

Glad to hear you have finally managed to install the templates.

I cannot understand why you don’t see the widescreen menu templates.
VS 9 does support these.
As I said before I can see 20 ufo files named like-- Clas05_W.ufo—
The ‘W’ I assume indicates a widescreen menu.

Again they are located here.

C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0\Template\16_9
After installing the templates pack you should see them all.

One thing to remember before you click ‘share-create disc’ make sure your project properties show 16:9

Video studio should default to the 16:9 menu format.
The thumbnails titles show the ‘W’.
