Thanks, Kathy, much appreciated.
Just one question, what would be the difference if I used Topaz Denoise or purchased Topaz Adjust. Would the Denoise function that would be included in the Topaz Adjust software be any different, less effective?

Pete.

If you want a "Topaz feeling", it can be made in PSP:
Young man Image2 corr Topaze like.jpg
I applied the following on my last attempt posted before.
Highlight/Midtone/Shadow tool: Shadow 40, Midtone: 40, Highlight: -30
Adjust / Softness / Soften tool
Local Tone Mapping tool: Strenth 4
Brightness/contrast tool: Brightness 0, Contrast 15
Adjust/ Hue and Saturation / Colorize: Hue 13, Saturation 50 (sepia toning)
Adjust / Skin smoothing: Amount 50

You may record all those steps and apply them in one click on an image.
PS : I find that the Topaze plugin deforms the face: the right eyelid is drooping and the smile on the left is too long and goes up.

Thanks, Jean-Luc, I will definitely bare these settings in mind and i will print this version off.
I know what you mean with regards to Topaz, and when I looked at Kathy's attempt on my computer screen I noticed the same as you, but oddly enough when it is printed it is much more acceptable,

Pete.

Hello Jean-Luc, I have just printed your latest version and it was good, except that it is quite "soft" compared to the Topaz version. Their really is quite a difference with all these pictures when you actually print them out on paper,

Pete.

I would not recommend Adjust AI for the type of work you are doing. Adjust AI is used to bring out colors and gives you control over highlights/shadows and details but is less effective at denoising. It's always best to download a free trial and see how it works for your workflow.

Hello Jean-Luc, the final print size will be approximately 50mm wide by 80mm Portrait.

Mmmm... Difficult to make a better job inside PSP. We may vary some settings but I think PSP is unable to give a smooth appearance (like Topaz) without being blurred. :?
Are the other pictures similar?

Hello Kathy,
I did as you suggested and downloaded the free trial version of Topaz Denoise AI. I ran the same picture through the software using the “Auto” command (see screenshot), but the results were nowhere near as dramatic as yours. I also played about with different values but couldn’t get anywhere near your results.

What am I doing wrong? Is the trial version different to yours?

Any help or advice would be appreciated,

Regards,

Peter.

I applied another method.
I'm using the Fast Fourier Transform plugin.
FFT_July2008.zip
(460.38 KiB) Downloaded 137 times
Extract it in the Plugins folder. Works on PSP 32bit.
Enlarge the Image's Canvas with grey. I added 44 pixels for this demonstration.
The plugin doesn't work well on image's border. Adding an empty space around the image prevents the defect.
Young man Image2 enlarge canvas.jpg
Apply FFT plugin. The result:
Young man Image2 apply FFT.jpg
Paint on the white areas. Don't touch the central area.
Young man Image2 remove white specks.jpg

Apply IFFT plugin (Inverse FFT):

The halftone dots are mostly removed and you can now enhance the image.

The trial version and my version are the same version number.

I ran it through on Auto and there were still dots on the right side of the image so I pushed the Remove Noise slider all the way to the right and that removed the dots. That made the image very soft so I increased the Recover Details slider.

Note: you can apply the results and run it through a second time if you are not happy with the results. It's a lot of trial and error.

Hope that helps.

Morning Jean-Luc, thank you for taking the time to try another method. I had read about FFT but hadn't tried it. Given that I have well over 100 pictures to correct I wanted to try and keep the procedure relatively simple. However, I may have to try this method and then possibly run the image through Topaz Denoise AI and see what can be achieved. I am certain we will get there in the end,

regards,

Pete.
