Import .vsp project files = file mismatch.

Post by Ken Veal »

I am trying to import a .vsp file from VS2019 into a VS2018 project with the same properties. I go import >media files>browse to .vsp files > open .I then see a message saying unable to open-file format mismatch.
Help please

Ordinarily, project files (vsp's) are not backwards compatible. For example, importing a vsp created under 2019 into 2018 won't work: the normal error message is the one you report, altho sometimes there is nothing - the UI just looks at you.

If you have a vsp created under 2019 and if you really do want to import it into 2018, then start VS2019, open that vsp and choose the File\Save as option: that will open a navigation panel and apart from the save location, there is an extra "filetype" box near the bottom. The box drop-down arrow will usually list the 2 prior VS versions, but in 2019 it's 3 (ie, a 2109 vsp, 2018 vsp et al). Choose the 2018 vsp item, make sure you modify the name of the vsp with the version (eg project_2018.vsp) or your 2019 vsp will be effectively lost, click OK and normally you will be warned that some content may not be available in the prior version (eg, features in the later version that are not available earlier) and a choice to continue or cancel. Click to continue and the new 2018 formatted vsp should now be available for use within 2018.

In contrast, vsp are always forwards compatible - VS2019 will always open a 2018 vsp.

As a good work practice to avoid confusion, when you have multiple versions of VS installed, include in project filenames with the VS version it was created or edited in.

When I tried to import the _2018.vsp file using VS2018, I got this message –“this file does not have an app associated for performing this action. Please install one or create an association in the Default Apps Setting page.” Bear in mind I probably will not have to do this very often and am doing it only because VS2019 will not even run the project without presenting me with a black screen several times. So I do not want to risk a render. The default apps setting page gave the VS2019 icon for opening .vsp files. Can I have some advice on what to do here please.

Hi Kenneth
Open the project VSP in 2019
Go to File - Save As

In that window I see the File Name, I add 2018 to that name just to ID the VSP as for 2018.

Important….
Below that I see Save As Type, using the down arrow choose “Corel Video Studio 2018 Project File”
Now I hit Save
Immediately Close Video Studio 2019

Open CVS2018
From File choose Open Project, Browse for the project saved with 2018 in its title, this is the option you need to use not Import as that is for video and images.
