Soliciting advice on a larger project
I've done exclusively smaller (<10 min.) projects until now, but am now embarking on an approximately 60 minute video. I find manipulating a long timeline can be annoying at times. If I were to make 3 or 4 smaller projects, rendering each individually, then join and render the result, would I loose a significant amount of quality?

You can add project files directly to the timeline.

Thank you so much, that's something I did not know and is exactly what I needed.jorgensen wrote:You can add project files directly to the timeline.

Hi
Just to add to the comment “add project files directly to the timeline”
If you were to create three projects, “Start” “Middle” and “End”
Each approx. 20 minutes
Edit and save each project as a VSP
You now insert/import the VSP to the library in the same way as adding a video file, I would create a new folder for those files.
Now you can drag each VSP to the timelines in turn to build up the final project
Holding the Shift key will flatten the files into one otherwise will show all clips within that project
The same process is used when adding Instant Projects to the timeline.

You don't explain why it's annoying. However, you can use Chapter Points to jump around a long timeline. However that being said, VS lacks any way to search for items in a project.Barbara wrote:I find manipulating a long timeline can be annoying at times.

Little things, it's the little things. Setting a small preview range on a long timeline is one. I'm still relatively new at this so I still have much to learn about the tricks and shortcuts available in the program.tletter wrote:You don't explain why it's annoying. Perhaps you are already aware that you can zoom-in down to the frame level or zoom-out to show about 37 minutes on the timeline.Barbara wrote:Setting a small preview range on a long timeline is one.

Re: Soliciting advice on a larger project
Yes, thanks, I get the zoom function on the timeline, but I'm not aware of any way to set the Preview Range there. You have to do it in the Preview Window, which shows the entire project. I'm usually interested in seeing what transitions look like across one or more clips.tletter wrote:Perhaps you are already aware that you can zoom-in down to the frame level or zoom-out to show about 37 minutes on the timeline.Barbara wrote:Setting a small preview range on a long timeline is one.

In any case, they are minor issues. Finding out that I can deal with the project in sections, then combine them in the timeline is what I wanted. Thanks again everyone.

Re: Soliciting advice on a larger project
Hi Barbara
Setting the Preview Range by using the Mark In and Out options or F3 and F4
You position your cursor along the timeline for the start, provided you are in Project Playback, press F3 will add an orange line across the top of the timeline, re position cursor for the end point and press F4
Below the preview screen is a white bar this also indicates the Preview Range selection, the square brackets [ ] can be used instead of F3 F4 to set the yellow (Trim Markers)
The selections here are a bit like a multi function tool as they will affect clips differently
So Using F3 and F4 when a title clip is selected will affect the Animation Pause Duration
Have a look at this web page may give you an idea just how these work
The second section showing the Preview Range options
