FX Colorfast - 1st time use - not so fast rendering

Post by RickMen »

I just recently used FXs Colorfast and AutoSketch for the 1st time. The project was only 3.20mins in duration with 39 clips. I applied the Autosketch FX to 1 clip of 6 sec and the Colorfast FX to 4 clips (using a preset) totally 13 sec in duration. Typically my render times are 1:3 (or 4) using Same as Project Settings and I set my project settings to match 1st clip which is representative of the properties for all the clips.

PAL (25 fps)
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 3840 x 2160, 25 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 99999 Kbps, 16:9
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
LPCM Audio: 768 Kbps

So for a 3.20min project I would expect a render time off 9-12 mins. In this case the project render time was 22 mins (1:7 ratio). I noticed that on the clips with the FXs the CPU usage drops from 80-90% to 20-30% while rendering the clip and the render completion percentage takes much more time to move on than for the non FX clips.

Is this typical behaviour for Colorfast (and AutoSketch) FX clips/projects? OR am I doing something wrong?

Your profile doesn't list the version of VS that you're using so that's an unknown.

Many filters are 3rd party ones so they're probably not optimized for use with VS. In any event, some of the filters render very slowly and don't fully leverage the available HW and in fact neither does VS.

This profile is demanding whilst rendering.

Suggest that you compare the project rendering times with and w/o Colorfast and AutoSketch filters enabled and let us know the results.

Thanks tletter for the feedback.

The key takeaway is that I added these FXs to 9% of the timeline in the project and the render time blows out by 220% from 1:3 to 1:7. It sort of discourages you from using these FXs. Corel adds these new features but the software struggles to apply them.

I'm on VS2018 ultimate.

I've used the Color Correction feature on several clips in a project and the rendering time went up dramatically but I needed the effect so I rendered overnight :(

I gave up on FX colorfast and was one of main reasons I went to pinnacle studio or VS 2019 is for the built in color control (pinnacles has even better control). You can probably find my post about colorfast in here somewhere but in the end going to FX support and then Corel’s support and then back to FX support etc etc you can’t get a clear answer as to if it even utilizes your hardware at all FX in the end basically admitted they don’t really care about consumer level editors anymore. You can’t even preview your work after because the preview becomes completely choppy, so then neither Corel or FX could answer if the filter is using the proxy file for preview or is it trying to use the original for editing preview causing it to become unplayable. So in short yes using colorfast makes everything become unbearably slow for preview and render, even for a high end system.

Thanks for the feedback 1jhill. As I suspected. Won't be rushing back to use this fx.
