PSP 2020 won't re-start

Post by Glenn M »

Having an annoying problem, hopefully someone is having a similar issue:

Just last weekend I upgraded from PSP 2018 to PSP2020 Ultimate. PSP2018 ran great, no issues at all. Been using it for years. Upgraded to PSP2020 Ult, and had no problems until I exited the program and tried to restart it a few minutes later. It would not start. I'd click the icon, it would give me an indication that it was loading, (cursor would change shape), then it would return to an arrow and nothing. It would not load. I checked Task Manager and I find that PSP is still an active in the Process tab. And it still is consuming memory. If I End Task (process), I can start PSP with no problem, until I exit and try to re-start once again.

If been in contact with Corel Tech Support and they are trying to find an answer but basically they gave me a link to down load a cleaner program, and a re-install link, which I did. But the issue still remains.

Anyone else experience this issue? or offer any suggestions.

Oh, originally I had installed both 32 & 64 bit versions of PSP 2020, but during the re-install I changed to 64 bit only, as that's all I really need.

Any help, ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have experienced the same for several versions now. But I am not sure there is a solution apart from what you have already found... Like you, I found I could kill the file in Task Manager and then PSP would restart. But now, knowing that, I close PSP then wait for, say, 30 seconds before trying to reopen it if I need it quickly again for some reason.

In my situation, it doesn't seem to matter how long I wait to re-start. But I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. And I'm not entirely sure it's a PSP issue. It may very well be a Windows issue. I'm going to keep digging and see what I can find, but any and all help is appreciated.

Further to what Ken said, this has been an issue with PSP for many, many years. If I recall correctly it even happened back when JASC was still the developer of the program. As Ken said, the best solution is simply to not try to start PSP immediately after closing it.

On another point, you may not think you need the 32bit PSP but you should install both versions regardless. First, storage is cheap and it doesn't take much extra storage space. Second, if you come across a 32bit plugin you want to be able to use that doesn't have a 64bit version then you won't be able to use the plugin unless you have 32bit PSP installed. And if you then try to install the 32bit version again you'll likely find that you have to re-install both the 32bit and 64bit versions again, and will likely lose some of the settings that you had originally made to the 64bit version.

Thanks for the input JoeB. I have never seen this issue before and I've been using PSP since JASC days. But I don't doubt you in the least.
I can see the value in having both 32bit and 64bit version available, and you're right, storage is cheap, I have a little over a 1TB left. So can I simply run setup again and add the 32bit version, or will I have to uninstall and reinstall both versions. Not a big deal either way, I haven't got a lot of time or customization invested in PSP 2020. \

Edit : Nevermind, I just re-read your post. I expect to have to uninstall and re-install both version. Thanks.

Thanks again for the input.

If I recall correctly when you try to install the 32bit version after already having only installed the 64bit version the installer will prompt you and ask if you want to uninstall PSP. You have to agree or it won't install. It will then uninstall the 64 bit version and then reinstall both. But it has been quite awhile since I did that, because now I usually just install both versions.

Just checked unloading times - yeah I have too much time to spare.
With Task manager open and double clicking desktop icon to open and the X to close
PSP X9 takes about 10 seconds to disappear from Task manager
PSP 2020 takes about 3 seconds so when I closed PSP 2020 and started it again I found it difficult to attempt to start it in less than 3 seconds .
So it definitely loads and unloads faster than PSP X9

See that's my problem. It never unloads. I just checked that out last night. 3 hours after closing, the process is still running. So it won't restart. If I shut down the process in Task Manager I can restart it. But will still have the same problem when I exit.

Slowness in unloading was previously linked to large folders of images , making of thumbnails and use of Manage mode.
I rarely use Manage mode. Tests were done in Edit mode with the Organiser opened to a desktop folder containing about 20 jpg images and no other files.

I wonder if that could be it hartpaul? I do work with a folder with a very large number of images in it. I'm not familiar with "managed mode", but I'll look into that as well. Thanks, I think you may have given me a theory to test. I'll get back to you on this.

That's the way I do it -- linked to Organizer and with only a few jpegs in it. I still occasionally have the background service continue to run after closing PSP, but it is relatively rare and relatively short lived.

This was my problem as well. It didn't seem like PSP was still running based on looking for it in the task manager processes list, but I couldn't restart it. I've had that problem several times since installing the 2020 version. I just had a break through. Paintshop Pro is not under P in the task manager list. It is under C in the task manager list. I will leave it to others that might stop by to figure out why.

For what it's worth, I have that problem constantly in PSP X4, which I've been using until my recent, semi-fraught-with-peril upgrade to PSP 2020. Honestly, it's kind of comforting to know some things never change. . . :D :D

Cheers,
