Does "Custom" frame work in the latest version?
I have version X10.5 of Corel VS, which apparently does not support 480x720 frames (portrait orientation), common on YouTube. Custom "User-Defined" is always grayed, no matter what video type I open; so I guess that feature is yet to be perfected. The nearest portrait frame option in the "Mobile" device settings is 360x640, which DAR distorts the picture. Does the latest version of VS offer genuine custom framing? Surely I am overlooking something.

Hi
X10
Not on my pc for a few days so cannot check, but from memory you should be able to set the poject properyies to use AVI with a codec Microsoft 1.
That should allow you to set a portrait frame
From Share - same as project settings should render a portrait video, I think Share - Mov may also use portrait?
The later versions are supposed to support portrait frames and indeed custom frames
Then we should be able to render to any custom size, I am not sure it works as easy as that, not on the pc to test.
Playing video on YouTube, I have always thought YT, uses a 16 / 9 ratio media player, non standard sizes being embedded with borders either side. If that is correct you might as well render to 16 / 9, at least you will have many formats to chose from.
Just add your video to the overlay track and set fit to height.
If you are intending to show the video on your web site then yes you would need a true portrait frame
I am assuming your videos are portrait which you intend to edit

Re: Does "Custom" frame work in the latest version?
Thanks for your kind response.
Selecting AVI as the save file format also fails. VS simply does not support 480x720p.
I tested VS to see if customization works at all and found that no matter what frame size (divisible by 16 8 or 4, widescreen, letterbox or any 16:9), or any container (mov, mp4, mpeg-II, vob, avi, wmv, mkv), "User-defined" is always grayed. To me, this is a major bug.
When I launch VS, an ad pops up, offering upgrade to the latest version of VS and PSP, both for $47.99; but I am now completely turned off Corel, since even many freeware apps support custom resolutions. I will look elsewhere for a better video editor.

If you follow Trevor's instructions you should be able to set a "Custom " frame rate

Re: Does "Custom" frame work in the latest version?
I am not on my pc for a couple of days so cannot give more info
I am not sure if x10 supported custom frame sizes to portrait
How ever as mentioned using avi will allow us to use user sizes to portrait mode.
You would have to render to avi although mov i believe would also do portrait
Can you tell us how you are intending to play / view the video?
It cannot be classed as a bug as the program is working as designed.

Re: Does "Custom" frame work in the latest version?
CVS X10
1 / Set project properties to use 480 x 720
Settings - Project Properties -- New – AVI tab – Compression None – General tab – User Defined Frame Size
Preview screen will show portrait frame – add your clips
2 / From Share – Same as Project Settings should render to AVI
3 / From Share – Mov - + to create custom profile- General tab – set User Defined frame size.
Other options to use AVI – Mjpeg and Web-M types will also allow for User Defined frame sizes
I cannot comment on the quality of the final video.
Using CVS 2018 and 2019
Have improved with handling portrait video, Project Properties can be set from the videos properties.
Rendering to HD portrait 1080 x 1920
However custom frame sizes are still limited to AVI and Mov

Re: Does "Custom" frame work in the latest version?
Thank you all for lending a hand.
My version of VS (X10.5) definitely does not support customization of video, AVI or MOV. The "User-defined" option and framerate are always grayed (see attached pic). If VS does let the user define a frame size, the challenge is quite beyond me. Below are the steps I tried. Can someone point out what I am overlooking? Thanks for your patience.
1. After trimming a video clip and not changing the properties (MP4, 480x720p, 30fps), I clicked on Share tab.
2. I selected AVI (also tried MOV) -> Settings (upper text menu) -> Project Properties (also tried "Movie Profile Manager").
3. From "Project format" drop-down menu, I chose "Mobile" -> New -> typed in the following name for the custom profile:
AVI (480x640,30fps,3Mbps)
4. General tab -> This is as far I get, with User-defined frame size consistently non-functional.

From your image
Go to the AVI tab
Make sure the Compression shows None

Re: Does "Custom" frame work in the latest version?
That did the trick. Thank you soooo much. Logically, I went to the next tab, which is "General," instead of skipping to the "AVI" tab, disabling compression than going back to "General."
