A word of warning - VideoStudio - despite the claims on the box regarding USB input etc does not appear generally to accept this form of input. There may also be an issue with some Panasonic Dv Camcorders.
Recentluy bought a copy, with a view to using USB input (after all the box said it handled it, and also was compatable with Panasonioc camcorders) only to find after much fustration that it does not - in my case away. A couple of other packages I tried did work though, confirming my hardware was OK.
I contacted Ulead support and eventually was told........and I quote
"Not all cameras with usb video streaming capability will be supported by VideoStudio."
and
"It is not a software bug / problem; VideoSTudio chose not to fully support usb capturing since it results in low video quality."
Really? A pity they say on the box.............
"Input/Output Support Device....USB capture devices and PC cameras.
So it goes...........
Now I suppose someone will say that is not what they really meant........
VideoStudio does not work with USB

OK, I guess I'll take up the gauntlet.KRWS wrote:Now I suppose someone will say that is not what they really meant........
USB capture devices (really an analog-to-digital converter) will generally provide a DirectShow capture driver, which Videostudio can talk to.
What you have is not a USB capture device -- you have a camcorder that can perform USB streaming (at webcam resolutions) and possibly USB transfers, depending on the actual model of your camcorder. I think only the GS250 and GS400 models support USB 2.0 Full Speed (480Mbps), which is needed for realtime full-resolution video transfers. You could use the MotionDV software that came bundled with the camcorder to perform the transfer.
Thanks for the info, was just about to go for a full uninstall and reinstall so saved me a lot of effort.
Have just purchased a new Panasonic GS75 and have spent a couple of weeks trying to get VS9 to talk to it. Works fine with the bundled Motion Studio software and Windows Movie Maker over USB. Guess I'll just purchase a DV cable.
However, my old Analog capture device works fine - Cameo Grabster 200.
Thanks

I have a Canon Optura 60 with the usb drivers installed that interface with the Windows DirectShow interface (2 drivers are installed).
One for the camcorder controller & one for the usb video streaming
I can capture "Full DV Type-1" using VS9, MovieFactory3/4, Nero version 6+, MSP 7. Processor usage was the same as firewire.
So, on my system the usb streaming works.
I still prefer firewire.
If you have a firewire cable then I would use that.
Hope this helps,
MD

Hang on!
I carefully documented several obvious bugs, and the response to three was a detailed uninstall/reinstall. "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail!"
but there is a place where you select the capture device. You should see a "Microsoft DV somethingorother" selection. Select it. What happens when you try to capture video? Did you have to install some drivers? Check the installation guide.
Well, then you were about to do what ULead support typically says for all problemstimf wrote:Thanks for the info, was just about to go for a full uninstall and reinstall so saved me a lot of effort.
Sweet! Very highly rated camera! 3-chip comes to "the rest of us". And as you say, the specs say "USB 2.0 (HS Mode) DV Data Streaming via USB". You say Windows MovieMaker can capture full DV-mode via USB2? That means the WDM Capture drivers are present, I believe. I can't give you the exact navigation instructions right now becuse my UVS9 is rendering a big projectHave just purchased a new Panasonic GS75 and have spent a couple of weeks trying to get VS9 to talk to it. I have 4 options available under change capture plugin:-but there is a place where you select the capture device. You should see a "Microsoft DV somethingorother" selection. Select it. What happens when you try to capture video? Did you have to install some drivers? Check the installation guide.
ULEAD Direct Show ....
ULEAD DSW MPEG ....
MICROMV MPEG ....
Windows Media Format .....
I've tried all 4 (in desperation) with no joy. But no Microsoft DV opton is present which is perhaps where the problem lies?
The Panasonic manual states the camera uses a video stream driver, installation is not required for Win XP SP2, but I have tried with and without this install. I'm guessing it just plain doesn't work with UVS so have ordered a DV cable and will pursue that route.
Thanks

Panasonic problems
I have also been trying (without success) to capture from a Panasonic NV-GS75 and I've now realised (as a result of posts from this thread) that my only option is a DV cable. If I get one, will I need a firewire card? I have USB 2.0 points on my PC but I presume a DV cable will have a larger plug on the PC end. Is this correct?
