Help! Unable to speed up video sufficiently in X10

Post by Mondschatten »

Hi,

I have a major problem where I need to get this project I am working on done today. The problem is I have a video that shows a drawing that takes 9 minutes to complete and I need to speed up the drawing so it is only about 30 seconds from start to finish. I need to do this sort of thing for about 20 videos (one of which is 25 minutes!).

I have already gone through the Speed/Time-Lapse option (in VS X8, which I normally use, and also in X10, which I just installed) and maxed out the speed to 1,000%. Frustratingly, this brings the video down to about 52 seconds, but seems unable to do more. In X10, there is a Time Remapping option, but either I don't know how to do it right or it suffers from the same problem, because I cannot get below 52 seconds on this video. The reason I need to do so is the drawings need to sync correctly with an audio clip I will be overlaying.

I can't seem to make it skip frames (putting a number in the Frame Frequency box doesn't have any noticeable effect) and I can't manually push the clip duration to below 52 seconds. I feel like this must be possible, as it seems pretty basic to me. I downloaded a free version of the program, Wondershare Filmora9, and it had no problem doing what I want. It didn't seem to need a speed-up of anything approaching 1,000% either. But I would have to pay $60 to get that program working without a watermark and I want to use Corel anyway so I am hoping someone can help me.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

Can't you render the project using the 1000% setting to produce a new video (i.e. running at 52 seconds). Then start a new project using that new video and again apply the speed increase -- at probably a good deal less than 1000% -- to reduce it to 30 seconds?

Hi. That is an interesting idea. A bit of a pain to do with all of the videos I have, but sounds workable. I am already deep into using another program to getting this done, but will try your idea and see if it works. Thanks.

Honestly, I don't think it would be too much work. The new video from rendering at 1000% is on just one line of the program, the main video line. Then you just apply another acceleration to that one video.

Hi
The Frame Frequency will not do what you want it will pause play for the desired setting then play again, it will not reduce the duration of the clip. Unfortunately for earlier programs there was a problem using Frame Frequency that was fixed by VS2019 release.
Changing the playback speed is done by removing frames, doing so will cause the video to be jerky.

I would try this way……….
1 / Select clip and set Speed Timelapse
2 / with clip selected – File - Save Trimmed Video will save a copy to the working folder and place a thumbnail in the Library.
3 / Drag thumbnail from library over original clip on timeline, hold CTRL key to replace clip, then drop.
4 / apply Speed Timelapse to new clip.

If you are intending to use Speed Timelapse to sync the audio, not sure it will be that easy?

Thanks for the replies. I had to use different software to finish this one since I was already into it pretty far by the time I saw the replies.

Ken, your idea does provide a creative way to get around the software limitation that appears to be inherent in VS - at least the versions I have. The main problem for me was twofold: I had a lot of videos to get through so the time to process each one of them would have been prohibitive given the time I had left. But, mainly I wanted to be able to sync these sped up videos with a narrative overlay and so that would mean needing to play with the speed on the fly and I think that wouldn't have been practical at times. An unusual situation, I know.

lata, I tried to do what you suggested, but when I select the modified clip and choose File, the Save Trimmed Video option is greyed out. I couldn't seem to make that become an option. Is there another step I am missing?

Hi
Very strange, just repeated my test to set Speed / Timelapse, choose 500%, then Ok closed the panel
Clip was still selected, File – Save Trimmed Video was available

Oh, I just realized that I am in VS X8 there. Switching to X10 does allow for the Save Trimmed Video option, but doesn't work with MOV files, unfortunately. It does work with an MP4 file, though. When I went back to try that in X8, it wouldn't let me, saying "The frame size (1920x1088) of the file size does not match the settings and therefore cannot be trimmed." Maybe it just doesn't deal with MOV file formats? At least I have some better luck in X10, but it still requires me to convert a MOV file to something else first. Too time consuming when dealing with multiple large files. Oh well...

Hi
Sorry to say that I do not have a problem when using Mov files
The message "The frame size (1920x1088) of the file size does not match the settings and therefore cannot be trimmed.”
Is referring to just that, the frame size and that shows as 1920 x 1088, if that is correct then that is the reason, your frame size should be using the standard size 1920 x 1080 not 1088.
The difference between the project properties using 16:9 and your video using 1088 is the cause for the error.
You can try placing the clips on the overlay track, set project properties to 1920 x 1080, it may allow you to do Save Trimmed Video.

You will also get that error from Share when creating a video file. Then again 1088 may be a typo

Hmm. I can't replicate that error anymore. But, still can't do what you suggest with MOV files. Not even an option, as the Save Trimmed Video is greyed out (in VS X8) or specifically warned against as a possibility (in VS X10) . Only for MOV files, I guess. Weird. Well, thanks for all the help on this.
