Frizzy hair/flyaway removal.

Post by RKWILLIAMSJR »

Hello everyone! I've been taking portraits of people and a good gust of wind can nearly ruin the end result. I know that frizzy hairs or flyaways can be dealt with in post and have yet to find a tutorial of how to clean it up in psp alone.
Please help IF YOU KNOW A WAY IN PSP. I do not have ps.
Thank you!

In order to get the most helpful suggestions, it would be best if you posted an example image.

Would help to know what versions of PSP you have as some features are not available in earlier versions. You could use cloning , the Blemish fixer and possibly the Magic Fill which was introduced in PSP X7

Clone Brush

(This video makes the same mistake that Photoshop tutorials do by trying to show off other features of the program, in this case the Smart Photo Fix, which increases the length of the video)
If you have the Opacity set at 100 then you get a sharp/clean copy whereas if you have less than 100% it softens the effect. I went to far with the part line in the hair , but using a copy of the original I was able to right click on the part in one image and clone that to the corrected image.

Blemish Fixer

While intended for spots on the face this can also be used for hair flyaways away from the normal hair and also ones that go across the face. The scratch remover can also be used for some mostly straight hairs.

Magic Fill
Video Tutorial here:

For me the magic fill is like using a huge paint brush on a small intricate painting - difficult.
You can make a selection of small areas and the use the magic fill to fill that area with parts arountd the selection. Meant for isolated spots in a mixed scene like a bush or grass but if the majority of area outside the selection is the required fill then it works.

I would like to see an improvement to the magic fill where you can tell it where not to fill from eg. being able to draw a boundary line around some sections of the selection and the fill does not select in that direction.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

You can achieve what you want with PSP as long as you have a situation where the area you want to fill is within the area that you want to draw a boundary around to limit where PSP takes the fill material from.

First, draw your selection around the area that you want to use as your fill. Of course, it must also include the area that you want to fill with some of the rest of the surrounding area that you have selected. Promote that first selection to a layer. Then, on that promoted selection, just select the area you want to be filled with the stuff that surrounds it. Then invoke Magic Fill. When you have done a successful fill just merge the promoted layer down to the layer you promoted it from.

A caution, however. I have found that the promoted selection must be large enough that there is a fairly large area available to use as fill and that the area to be filled within it must be a fairly smaller portion of the whole promoted selection. Otherwise PSP crashes.

Here's where I give up on PSP and other editors. There comes a point where a single program simply can't do everything for everyone. I think we all expect too much and demand too much.
I would suggest using plugins which have been developed for these very tasks. My solution is to download something like Topaz Mask AI.

Thank you hartpaul!!!
It's not as refined as photoshop's content aware but it's something.
I don't think it's too much to ask for improvements and refinements on paint shop pro. I can't speak for anyone else but PSP was advertised as an alternative to Photoshop and even shows off a video with the programs side by side editing a headshot marketing as a comparable product. If it's possible to be improved without copyright problems, I say improve, reflect it in the price.
Thanks again.
