Ulead can't open DVD recorder disc, but MS Media Player can

Post by jd_hupp »

A DVD recorded by a new DVD recorder (CyberHome CH-DVR 1600) plays back fine on the DVD recorder or on a Magnavox DVD Player connected to a TV. And it plays fine on a PC with Microsoft Media Player 10. But I want to import the DVD into Ulead VideoStudio 9, and VS9 does not recognize the DVD. (I think I have another DVD Player program that also fails to recognize the disc.) Is this a codec issue? How can I make this work?

Do you know if the format of the DVD is DVD-VR or DVD-R/RW? In either case, have you tried using the 'Import from DVD/DVD-VR button' on VS9's capture page (top left, second option)?

I just had a similar problem with a DVD someone gave me, which had been recorded on a stand-alone Panasonic recorder/player, but it would not play on anything but the original recorder. I think that the disc was not 'finished' (i.e. no write-out code added by the recorder) before it was taken out of the recorder. I confess I have no idea how to finish such a disc apart from putting it back into the original recorder, but in my case, the latter is now 1300 km away from where I live. So I had to resort to a program called DVD Rescue, which extracted the VOB file, which I could rename to MPG, insert it in VS9 and burn a new copy.

Any alternatives for finishing a disc would be most welcome, though.

DVD format & finalizing

Post by jd_hupp »

The DVD format is DVD+RW, which, along with DVD+R, are the only formats the recorder supports. The manual states (yes, I read the manual) that DVD+RW discs do not need to be finalized, that this step is specified only for DVD+R discs. On the other hand, they only make reference to playing the discs in standard DVD players, not in PC DVD drives. So I think this is worth trying. Thanks for the idea.

If the unit records to Dvd+rw & Dvd+r then it's recording
standard video & the +VR format (dvd+rw).

Being a DVD+RW if you have other packet writing software on the machine when you put the dvd into the tray that program may take over the dvd+rw.
The point being everything works good until you eject the disk. Then a program such as Nero's InCD pops up saying updating disk. After that
it's next to impossible to get the original content from the dvd.
This happens on my system to dvd+rw's and dvd-rw's with Nero InCD installed. I've un-installed Nero InCD.

Hope this helps,

DVD recorder won't finalize DVD+RW; Nero InCD not installed

Post by jd_hupp »

Ken, I attempted to try your idea about finalizing the DVD+RW. The manual said that DVD+RW discs don't need to be finalized, leading you to think that you could finalize but it would be a waste of time. But it's more than that: the option to finalize is a DVD+RW is simply not offered by the DVD recorder. The option is inactive. And I have not yet found a way to finalize the disc through Ulead or NTI software.

MadDrummer, I don't have Nero InCD or another packet-writer installed on this machine.

But this does seem to be a software issue, since the discs can be played by several DVD playing software packages: Microsoft Media Player, NTI DVD Player, and Arcade DVD Player.

So why can't VideoStudio import from them, and is there a fix?

What is the error your are getting?
Can you open the DVD using windows explorer and see the contents
under the VIDEO_TS folder or whatevers on the dvd?

What is the speed rating/brand of the dvd+rw?
If you can't see the contents of the dvd using windows explorer then VS9 may not see it either.

Could be your dvd reader in the computer not being compatible with the media.
If you are on a network, and another computer can read the dvd+rw then share the dvd in that (other) computer and map a drive in your computer
to that shared dvd drive. Then trying importing from the new shared drive letter.
Or, copy the contents to the harddisk and try importing from the harddisk.

The Import DVD/VR disk module is different from previous versions. You should be able to import a DVD-R or DVD+R dvd. Other formats may or may not have issues.

If you really need the video make a copy of it to a dvd-r or dvd+r and import the copy.

Thanks once again, MD, for taking an interest in this topic (and many others).

Ulead fails to import with the error message: "Failed to open DVD. Report ID: 0x800408ff(2303)."

And yes, Explorer can see the DVD contents in any machine that I've tried, showing the VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS folders and their contents.

On the media question: HP DVD+RW discs rated at 4x.

On the thought that maybe we're dealing with a DVD drive issue, I have tried importing the video into VS9 in two different machines (Win 98 and Win XP) with two different DVD drives, and also from a third Win XP computer with yet a different DVD drive, using a mapped drive to that DVD drive over the network. So VS9 has failed to import from 3 different DVD drives under either Win 98 or XP, on machines where at least some other DVD-playing software is able to read the discs.

Have anything more in the bag of tricks, MD?

Any tech reps from Ulead want to get involved here? I'm a consultant having my first in-depth experience with Ulead, trying to iron out a solution for a high school athletics department, working for the moment with the free trial download. So far this looks to me like a software issue with VS9 ...

Out of curiosity, what happens when you try to open that DVD using something like DVD Shrink?

That is a disk recorded in the +VR mode (editable menu format).

There are more things you could do or try.
Copying to the harddisk but that's similar to a mapped drive.
Last resort is get the video out of the +VR format and into dvd-video format which only uses the VIDEO_TS folder.

At this point I would use Nero to import the dvd if your under time constraints.

Hope this helps,

DVD Shrink error; Nero does import--but why?

Post by jd_hupp »

Thanks, THoff, for weighing in on the topic. When trying to open the disc, newly installed DVD Shrink 3.2 yields an error: "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Invalid DVD navigation structure."

Does that give you a clue as to why VS9 will not open the disc?

MadDrummer, Nero did successfully import the video. How did you know it would work, when VS9 does not? Is VS9 supposed to support both DVD-Video and DVD+VR?

By the way, MD, these are just sample discs I am working with now to iron out a regular procedure. It needs to be a simple procedure, for use by high school coaches whose real interest is not delving into software, but in quickly editing video footage to show to their teams. So I am looking for the simplest (all-in-one importing/editing/authoring) and cheapest solution that will do the job for these guys.

It doesn't tell me what is wrong with it, but it does tell me that something is wrong with the disk, and that that is why Videostudio fails to open the disk.

Does the DVD recorder have any options for configuring chapters points or menus? If so, I would try disabling these features altogether to see if that will create a valid disk -- there may be a bug in the firmware.

What quality are you burning the DVDs at in the recorder? I found that VS9 would not import anything other than HQ or SP created DVD VRs. Anything outside of that would give an error message that sounds familiar to the one you are having.

>>MadDrummer, Nero did successfully import the video. How did you know it would work,
Nero has been working with the +VR format for quite awhile.

It's somewhat confusing. Different Formats. The +VR format versus the -VR format. The +VR format wasn't designed to edit/cut/split the videos. The +VR format was designed to change or edit the Menu's on the dvd.
The -VR format was designed to cut/split the mpeg videos on the dvd.
Take notice that VS says "Import from DVD/DVD-VR".
The -VR format doesn't use dvd menu's it uses "Playlists" or simple titles.

You can use Ulead's DVD MovieFactory to edit a +VR disk and change the menus. That would be the "Edit Disk" function.

I would say that if you recorded something at "Standard Mode or High Quality" onto a DVD+R (write once only dvd), then VS9 will import the video. Same dvd-video format as any standard dvd. After recording in the recorder the dvd disk needs to be finalized if to be used by other equipment otherwise the computer won't recongize the dvd.

>>>So I am looking for the simplest (all-in-one importing/editing/authoring)

For teaching you need results:
The only method I know is to purchase a panasonic "DMR-E95" dvd recorder unit that has an internal 160gig HardDisk. All the coaches will have to learn is how to use the remote control. It does everything. You can pick out sections and make playlists and view/pick the playlists on the screen.
Or just split the video into the sections you want. Also, the unit will burn to a dvd-r or dvd-ram disk. You can transfer anything to the harddisk that was recorded by camcorders, DV/dvd camcorders/analog VHS/Hi-8/ firewire. All menus are motion menu thumbnails playing back the video for easy picking.

You then can transfer the videos to a dvd or dvd-ram and import them into a computer program lilke VideoStudio or Dvd MovieFactory and make custom dvd's for final distribution.

The only drawback with the unit is you should disable the "Program Guide" that the unit uses.

Every product has it's place.

Hope this helps,

A question of DVD+VR, DVD-VR or DVD-Video

Post by jd_hupp »

I feel like this part of the discussion about video format support (DVD+VR, DVD-VR and DVD-Video) is probably zeroing in on the issue.

THoff, following up on your last post: The DVD recorder permits turning off chapter points but not menus. But turning off chapter points does not produce a disc that VS9 can import from.

But as I see it now, THoff, the issue may not be whether or not the DVD recorder produces a valid disc, but a valid DVD+VR, DVD-VR or DVD-Video, and which of those VS9 supports. Does DVD Shrink open valid DVD+VR discs?

Timf, the sample discs I have created in the DVD recorder have all been either HQ or SP quality, so that should remove that issue as a possible cause.

MadDrummer, as I say at the top of this post, I feel like this discussion of video format is really where the process is failing for me, so thanks. Nero knows not only how to play DVD+VR but also how to import that format. VS9 does not yet support DVD+VR imports. Ulead MovieFactory supports editing of DVD+VR menus, but likewise does not know how to import DVD+VR video. From the competition, I see that Adobe Premiere Elements discourages the import of MPEG (includes all the DVD formats?), though it may do some MPEG. Adobe is tuned to work with AVI, and if you must start with MPEG, they advise using a third-party tool to convert to AVI, then import that into Adobe.

So as you say, MD, one solution should be to record my source on a DVD+R, which should have the consequence of producing DVD-Video format rather than DVD+VR. Another solution, as you said earlier, would be to use an intermediate tool like Nero (or some freeware from VideoHelp.com, if many coaches need a copy of something for their home computers?) that knows how to import from DVD+VR.

A related question that bears on ongoing costs: Do you know if I can format a DVD+RW in a computer so that the DVD recorder will treat it like a DVD+R? As it is, it seems that the DVD recorder auto-detects the disc type and imposes DVD+VR recording for DVD+RW discs. (I mention that because it seemed possible to treat CD (+ or - ?) RW discs like CD (+ or - ?) R discs.)

Or similarly, do you know of any technical reason why DVD-Video cannot be recorded on a DVD+RW?

>>Do you know if I can format a DVD+RW in a computer so that the DVD
>>recorder will treat it like a DVD+R?
No. You can write a DVD+RW as a data disc or a dvd-video disk using the same file structure as read-only media.
If you try to do that the recorder will reformat the dvd anyway.

I just recorded onto a DVD+RW in a Sony "RDR-GX7" at HQ mode for
44 minutes. When I put the dvd into the recorder it automatically formatted it.

Using VS9 to import the dvd it says :
"Label: SONY_DVD_RECORDER_VOLUME"
Format: DVD+VR
TV system: NTSC 30fps

Imported the complete 3.2gig video into the working folder.
Also could import the chapters separately.
Also could MARK an IN/OUT section only to import (really great feature, can't do that in Nero). So if I only want about a 10 minute section I can mark the IN and OUT of the section and import only that 1 mpeg2 file, instead of having to import the complete 3.2gig file and extract using VS9. Nice feature.
This is the way many users requested the program to work. To be able to import the complete video along with other importing features.
I know the new module has some issues but with certain formats it's working great.

VS9 read the dvd first in a reader(Lite-On) and a dvd writer (Sony-510a). Worked in both units.

When opening the DVD using Windows Explorer it has a
"VIDEO_RM and a VIDEO_TS" folder(s) so it's written +VR like yours.
There is a difference between our systems. I have MovieFactory 4 installed which adds some drivers. I don't know if that is affecting the system and making it work.

Then I opened up MovieFactory 4 and selected "Edit DVD" after 30 seconds it had read the dvd and I created a Main Menu with 2 chaptering menus with custom backgrounds. Wrote the new information back to the dvd and everything worked on the software player in the computer. Put the dvd into the Sony unit and played it. Also added more material to the dvd.

So, at least on my system VS9 and MF4 imports +VR disks recorded on a Sony dvd recorder RDR-GX7 written in +VR format.

Hope this helps,

MD
