Paste as new image problem

Post by Ken Veal »

I have lost the ability to copy an image outside PSPRo 2019 and then, in PSPRo ,right click and paste as new image. When I right click I see the option to open, customise, preferences and workspace. With Close other docs ,close all and magnifier greyed out
Help please

It means PSP doesn't recognize what is on the clipboard. Or what is on the clipboard isn't an image. Can you paste into other programs?

If I double click on a jpeg image, 82.9 KB. 1263 x 710.It opens in PSPRo. If I copy it I cannot open it via paste as new image. It does copy and paste into Microsoft Word and my Pictures folder.

Are you talking about copying a file? PSP does not support that. You have to open the image in some program that will paste the contents of the image to the clipboard. Copying a file from explorer only copies the file name and location. PSP doesn't know what to do with that.

What I am trying to do and have always been able to do up to now is to right click > copy an image in my Pictures, then open PSPRo and right click > paste as new image. The image then shows in the workspace.Clicking copy will allow me to paste the image into ie a Word doc. or as a duplicate back into my Pictures folder.I have not tried to paste it anywhere else.

I understand what you're trying to do. I'm saying it's not possible. You can drag and drop from explorer, but from PSP8 to today I've never been able to copy and paste the file from explorer into PSP. Word does it because Word was programmed to respond to a "List of Files" data object on the clipboard. But PSP only looks for actual image data in Bitmap or PSPImage format. Since Explorer will only copy the file name to the clipboard PSP won't read and respond to it.

Ken; Why not, when in your Pictures folder, Right Click on the picture file & select the <Open With> option. Then choose PSPpro.

This is true. However, there is a workaround. It works so well that I have put it into every context menu I can find. The workaround is this: In Menu > Edit there is a selection, Paste As New Image. Invoke that and your image will be pasted in PSP. There are other choices as well. Feel free to experiment. I found Paste As New Selection very useful in my work, for example.

Bravo! This is so useful that I put in an Open with PSP 2018 selection in all my context menus for all files.

But surely this is what Ken Veal says he has done in his first post in this thread? In my case, if I copy a thumbnail of an image in my Pictures library window, Paste As New Image is not enabled in Menu > Edit. I hasten to add that I have never tried doing this before since I always open my images from within PSP. I have always believed what Levi Fiction said above about not being able to copy > paste a thumbnail into PSP, so never tried it.

I am in any case not sure if Ken means he copies a thumbnail in Pictures, or whether he actually opens the image in, say, the Win 10 Photos app, and copies it there.

TimW, R/Click on image > Open with PSPRo works great for me
ehume , when I r/click > copy on an image and then go to Edit > Paste as new image it is greyed out, the only option highlighted is copy special but its options are greyed out when you click on its arrow for further options.
LeviFiction, I take on board what you say and bow to your superior knowledge but I have not been imagining the fact that for years now I have been able to r/ click an image, click copy then open it up in PSPRo by R/clicking in the workspace and selecting paste as new image.

Ken, you are not actually getting to the crux of the issue here with your replies. So let's try again.

If I use Windows Explorer to go to the Pictures folder it shows me a bunch of thumbnails in that folder. As LeviFiction said, you can't right click on those thumbnails and do Copy and then paste into PSP.

Therefore, can you please explain how you are right clicking "on a full size image" in the Pictures folder. I only get thumbnails in the Pictures folder when looking at that folder with Windows Explorer. To get a "full size image" of one of those thumbnails I have to open it somewhere (one way I do that is to simply double-click it and it opens in Irfanview). So please explain how you are seeing a "full size image" in your Pictures folder before you right click it to copy it.
Regards,

JoeB

Not saying you imagined it Ken Veal. Just that I personally think you're mistaken. That could mean there are more steps than you're remembering or there was some extra piece somewhere that supported it that's no longer working. It could be anything from a script, to a Widows extension that allows copying the image data to the clipboard instead of just the file name. However you managed it previously I cannot say. I'm just saying PSP doesn't support this directly.

Speaking of scripts, I just wrote one up quickly to take care of this. If you're interested, I hope you find it useful.

Left-click on an image. That will open it in the default image viewer. Do a ctrl-c, then go to PSP. When you go to Edit, Paste As New Image will not be greyed out.

Or you can open the image in PSP directly.

What you cannot do is open the thumbnail directly.
