Not really enough information, so am guessing a bit . .
1. assuming you are trying to render (share mode/same as project properties) and the same as project properties box is not ticked . . . . and looks 'greyed'.
- usually this would be because you have selected a specific format to render to (one of the format boxes eg for AVI, MOV etc is selected). In this case, just click on the same as project properties box and VS should switch to this configuration.

You can't actually save 'same as 1st video clip' - you have a confusion of terms there. There is a facility when - if the 1st video clip in the timeline has different properties to those defined in Settings/project properties (VS has a default, but there is a drop down list with a range of options you can choose from) then you get a message box asking if you want to make the project have the same properties as that 1st clip. You enable that message in Settings/preferences general tab, in project section tick the box about "show message when...." and click OK.

To save a project to be the same format as the 1st clip requires several steps in sequence: you would have to:
- have said 'yes' to the message about same as project properties when the 1st clip is imported to the timeline; and
- when all your edits are done, and it's time to render (create the output file) in share mode select 'same as project properties' box.

Hi gca
What are the properties of your video file?

Some properties will not be suitable for Same as First Clip where the program is not capable of creating those, video with no audio stream comes to mind.
Yesterday I did render a slide show to Mov using the default QuickTime (1920 x 1080, 25p) template
After reading your post today I tested that video to Share – Same as First Clip and the option was greyed out

I don’t understand why that should be as the video was created using VS, although I do not usually create Mov I would think Same as First Clip would/should be available?

One thing not available is to set Mov for Project Properties, but that is the same for all VS versions and should not affect this option, as such the Show Messages options would never show when using Mov files.
