Thumbnail database location

Post by reefdude »

Is there any way to change the location of the Thumbnail database, (created from browsing folders), from the C: drive to a different drive?

Where is it located now? And what are the files named?

currently in: C:\Users\bsmith\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\2020\Thumbs\{many subfolders with very long autogenerated and meaningless file names, e.g. 10148fC1D8b1131b7C2460025fe96FBD}\the_original_filenames.jpg

Thanks. Mine are in C:\Users\alpha\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\2018\Thumbs, C:\Users\alpha\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\19.0\Thumbs, etc. Let us know if the placement is customizable.

Since it is going into the AppData folder there probably isn't any way to configure this short of relocating your user home folder where the AppData folder resides.

I suppose you could always create a symbolic link to a folder on another drive and place that link in the AppData folder. Then PSP would assume it was writing to the main drive but it's actually going to the other drive.

I would use a Junction link to do that. If done correctly it will work.
I've done that to Corel's main folder in AppData a long time ago and it has been successful with no problems with each new PSP version.
I've used Junction links on many large folders that default to AppData and ProgramData.
e.g. some of my Junction links are for Filter Forge Library, Filter Forge Thumbnails, On1 AppData, On1 Program Data, Mail Storage, Zinio Reader, Adobe, PaintShopPro, Corel, Nvidia, Downloaded Installations, Steam, games etc.
This has moved many GB's off my smaller C SSD onto my 3 TB internal user drive and I've never had a problem with the programs.

For Corel, in AppData, mine shows as shortcut link to the other drive.
I chose to set up a Junction link to the whole folder, rather than just the Thumbnail Database, which then moves all the folders.
Inside that folder are the folders for 2018, 2019, 2020 and inside each year are the standard sub folders including Thumbs.
