background eraser tool issue
I have started to have a problem with the background eraser tool in PSPRo 2019.The image is a light coloured seedling on a black back ground , I want to make the background transparent then use the image on another image. After a couple of seconds, erasing stops, brush does not respond and I have to re select the layer or duplicate raster layer every time to continue using the background easer tool. These are the settings I am using if that could be the problem.
Hardness 100 step 5 density, opacity and thickness 100
Tolerance 4 Sharpness 70 Sampling Continuous
Limits dis. Auto tolerance
Help please

Re: background eraser tool issue
Have you tried re-setting the program? That often cures weird problems.
Save any custom workspace you might have made, then close PSP, open it again holding the Shift key as you do.
There will be a message telling you PSP is reverting to it's default settings, click OK.
Warning: Some File Allocations and Preferences might need re-doing.

Re: background eraser tool issue
In the absence of a provided image to test I constructed my own consisting of a banana on a black background and using your settings (brush size not mentioned).
And settings used:
Now at this point I suggest to you that the Tolerance value is ignored if you have auto tolerance checked and you cannot changethe Tolerance setting until you untick auto tolerance.
I then clicked 4 times (not dragged) along the edge and the result is shown.
As can be seen no problems except that because the banana has some black lines , they have been erased as well.
To stop this I need to change the limits to Contiguous so that only all black connected parts are erased. That way since the black bits inside the banana are not connected (contiguous) with the outside black, they are not erased.
Now as you can see the the black parts inside the banana are not erased. Still no problems.

Re: background eraser tool issue
Because of 4 attachments limit have had to continue this with another posting.
Another way that I learned from another member on this forum was to make the brush size so large that it covers the whole image and you erase all outside the banana with one click.
An alternative would be to use the magic wand to select the black area outside the banana. Settings are shown. Then hit the Delete key and the black is removed

Re: background eraser tool issue
Thanks for the reset advice Joelle.I did a reset and thought that had cured the problem as everything was ok for a few minutes. Then the same fault kept happening, this time reselecting the layers did not work.I had to wait a while and kept moving the mouse about until erasing worked , so I am not in a good place at the moment.
hartpaul, appreciate your time and effort shown in your reply, there was some good info there. Will use it when the erasing issue is fixed.

Re: background eraser tool issue
Ken , I went to the trouble of showing you how the background eraser should work and also a couple of alternatives.
We still don't know for sure what you were trying to do, and what your setup was doing.
You have indicated and repeated that you are trying to erase parts of a layer where there are more than one layer. It would have saved me a lot of alternative explanations and perhaps have obtained you a faster answer if you had included a cropped screen shot of your setup. ie. scale your image down (in windowed mode) and drag it beside your layers palette.
This would have shown us the type of image you are working on and also the layer presentation and whether other layers are interfering with the erasing process.

Hmm, this sure is weird.
Your settings are like mine.
You have tried to re-set the settings ? : click on Presets, then on the re-set curved arrow:

Re: background eraser tool issue
I loaded the image, selected the b/ground eraser. > preset >reset to default. No response for a few seconds then erased worked but not for long .I had to wait for a few seconds and/or move to another part of the image and continue erasing until it stopped responding and then repeating the cycle again.

Re: background eraser tool issue
Found this, but it might not have anything to do with it:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/48827803@ ... 553480743/
The only difference between your version and mine is that I use X9.
Can't think of what else to suggest, other than a ticket to Corel support.

I tried erasing on another image (a screenshot ) everything worked ok.You can see how much erasing I could do without any trouble.

Re: background eraser tool issue
Was just reading this:
https://support.corel.com/hc/en-us/arti ... und-Eraser
But that doesn't help much either.
Weird that it works fine on one photo and not another...

Re: background eraser tool issue
Think our posts crossed. One question I have about the erase test image is why is is not completely erasing all that is below it, there is a lot of text etc partially visible and it does not remove when I go over it again. Is it a setting issue ?
