Change color issue

Post by okyou »

Hello,

I tried to change the color of a bright orange date stamp to a more subtle color to match the rest of the picture but failed. What I did is first select the area and color as
pic.JPG
and then when I click the change color to the bright orange area, the whole selected area change instead of the bright orange area as
pic1.jpg
I guess the 2 colors are too close and PS cannot distinguish the different. Is there any way to change the bright orange into a more subtle to match the rest of the photo ?

Thanks

In the dialog, you have selected the Palette option (upper left square). Try selecting the Slider option (two rightward).

If you select the area, the content of all the area will change color.
If you select only the date, only the date will change color.

Try also the Color Replacer tool (not the Color Changer tool).

If you don't want the date stamp, you could clone it out of the image.

Use the Magic Wand to select each number:

You may also use the Color Replacer Tool after selecting the area:

What is the Action button?
After the date stamp is selected (be sure you are in Add mode), paint it with another color or use the Color Replacer tool to change the color. :-)

It looks as if you still have a "shadow" of the outline of the date characters. If that is the issue you're seeing (you posted a small image), then try the following:

After you have made your selection of all of the characters in the date, go to Selections>Modify>Expand. Use that dialogue box to expand the selection until it surrounds not just the characters but also includes a little bit of the area surrounding the text. Then try the Magic Fill button (what you called the Action button) again.

JoeB

To complete what JoeB says, when using Magic Wand Tool, check the Anti-alias as seen on my screen capture. This will expand the selection to the outline border.
For an easier work, you may increase the image's size: Image / Resize / By Percentage / Percent 200%. After the job is done, do Image / Resize... Percent 50% to recover the initial size.

In my experience, when removing text with the Magic Wand and then Magic Fill tool, having Anti-alias checked with the Magic Wand can sometimes cause another type of ghost outline where the text was, because Anti-alias does create a softened edge that can be subtly replicated when the Magic Fill tool is invoked. It may depend on the size of the text and the surrounding area being used as fill, so I generally try to avoid it in these particular situations.

Excellent point, Jean-Luc! Now that I have done a closer reading of the OP's original post and then carefully read all of the other posts, I believe you are the only one who has actually properly read what the OP originally said. My replies have made on the assumption that the OP was trying to remove the date stamp, but he only said that the goal was to make it blend in better with the surrounding color, not remove it completely. A good reminder to me, at least, to read for comprehension!

And if you are correct that he just wants to make the color of the date stamp less obvious (perhaps closer to the surrounding color so that it doesn't stand out so obviously) then your suggestion that he use Anti-alias when selecting the text definitely makes sense. Then paint with a different color or maybe even try some adjustments with Hue, Saturation Lightness filter.
