If you upload to YT a lot, you'll notice that at the end of the upload there is a "processing" phase: which is where YT changes your upload to a format that is good for quick download in a browser and viewing in the small preview window. So even tho - now - mp4 is a preferred format, it's going to lose a bit when YT does it's thing.
So frankly, an upload in mgeg2 to YT should do just as well as an HD mp4 clip. Others may care to comment on that.

YouTube states that you should use one of the following formats for uploading: .MOV, .MPEG4, .MP4, .AVI, .WMV, .MPEGPS, .FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm, and HEVC (h265).
