VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
Yesterday I was converting a 14-minute video created in VS Pro X9 to MP4 format when suddenly, at 40% completion, I got an error message saying that the program had stopped working.
Just like that!
I had had prior issues with BSODs occurring while editing video clips with the program, but intense diagnostics cured that; no BSODs lately, and not during this time either. A puzzle!
Here are my system specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor, AMD64 Family 21 Model 2 Stepping 0
Processor Count: 8
RAM: 16353 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970, -1 Mb
Hard Drives: C: 255 GB (79 GB Free); D: 0 GB (0 GB Free); E: 48 GB (43 GB Free); F: 1784 GB (1246 GB Free); H: 289 GB (207 GB Free); I: 465 GB (258 GB Free);
Motherboard: ASRock, 970A-G/3.1
Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials, Enabled and Updated
Thanks for any insights!

Re: VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
Can you please give us the properties of the original video -- right click one of the clips in either the Video Studio library window or in the timeline, and copy the Properties here or take a screen shot of the Properties box and upload it here as an Attachment. It would also be useful if you could give us the properties of the mp4 to which you were converting the video. Was it 4K or HD?

Here are the Properties of one of the video clips (from the Library) included in the Video, Attached.
Ditto Properties of MP-4 Rendering.

Re: VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
Do all the videos in the project have the same sort of Properties or are there other types of video included?
I ask since the input video is already H.264 mp4. Moreover, it is 30P with a bitrate of 15000 kbps. Yet you are outputting H.264 mp4 at 60P and with a higher bitrate of 26000 kbps, though with Dolby audio. This is, of course, possible, and should work, though doubling the frame rate from 30 to 60P means that in effect VS will be inventing the new frames by simply repeating existing frames. Normally I would not thought this would cause the program to crash.
Looking through your project, what is the video at the 40% crash point? Is it in any way different from the rest of the project?

Re: VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
Yes, all the clips have the same Properties throughout the Video.
I can't recall exactly which clip was at the 40% mark. But I will confirm that all of the
clips share the same exact Properties.
I wonder what other shutdown issues may be plaguing VS Pro X9....
Thanks!

Re: VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
Generally, X9 is considered to be the most stable of recent VS versions.
Assuming your project plays all the way thru, correctly, in edit mode, and given that you say all the clips have the same properties, then render issues have occurred with
- some transitions
- frame rate issues
- bit rates (v high eg around 50mb or more in clips from some cameras) can cause problems.
Suggested approaches to diagnose just what is causing this:
1. You are using MP4 as the output format. Try changing the render method to same as 'project properties' (tick that box) and try a render: does it fail at the same point? If so, estimate - based on percentage of project time (eg, 40% of 5min 35sec is approx 2min 14sec) - what is in the timeline or overlay tracks at that time datum? can it be deleted or muted and then render OK?
2. Try muting the entire tracks (the movie reel icon in the LH section of the track, hovered mouse will show 'disable xx track' label), one by one, and trial render; un-mute if a track muted does not result in a successful result, and mute the next rack etc until you find the track causing the problem. Once the track is found, what's in it at the failure time datum? Remove that item and try rendering again with all tracks enabled.

Re: VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
So I rendered the Video but selected "Same as Property Settings" as you suggested--and the Rendering went just fine. Also checked "Smart Render."
But...
Afterwards, VS Pro X9 froze and wouldn't respond. When I went to Task Manager (in Win 7) to close the program,
TM wouldn't respond--just got a frozen black screen.
So I re-booted and my OS came up normally. The MPEG version of the Video played back intact.
It looks to me like VS Pro X9 is such a resource hog during rendering, it just takes over!
Your thoughts?

Are you saying that your machine successfully rendered the video and then it froze-up?DayO wrote: the Rendering went just fine ... But... Afterwards, VS Pro X9 froze and wouldn't respond.
You ought to use TM and see what resource is being maxed out, e.g. CPU, memory, etc. I suspect it's memory in your case as your profile states that you only have 4GB. Personally, I wouldn't recommend less than 16GB.DayO wrote:It looks to me like VS Pro X9 is such a resource hog during rendering, it just takes over!

Yes, my PC successfully rendered the video to MPEG format, then froze up.
I currently have 16353 Mgb of RAM.

Re: VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
You do need to update your profile - 16gb is a lot more than the 4gb you have listed there. Did you get a new PC recently?
Edit, more:
So, the mp4 output fails, but same as project properties works. You posted the properties of the original (failing) mp4 output, so what are the properties of the project - those that render "same as project properties" works?? Post a screenshot please. There has to be something different which suggests a cause for the mp4 render failure.

Re: VS Pro X9 Suddenly Shuts Down
From project file to render output based on the properties extract (the text panel), there's at least 3 things that could cause the issue:
- frame rate: you are going from NTSC standard 29.97 to 59.94 fps
- format: from MPEG to MP4 part 10: h264 advanced video coding (edit: see the wikipedia entry on H264)
- bit rate: from 8000kbps to 26,000 kbps
And the fact that it worked for 40% of the output suggests that the combination of these ultimately choked the render engine.

Thank you!
Can you suggest project properties for rendering to MPEG that would give the finished product the best attributes
for uploading to YouTube?
