VS2018 stopped working when trying to open a VSP from 2008
I'm trying to open a project I created back in 2008 (I can't recall which version of VS I used to create the project with back then) but VS2018 can't open the project, VS2018 crashes and I get a windows error message saying "Corel VideoStudio has Stopped working". Any suggestions on how I can open the old project?
For the VSP file I'm trying to open under Open->Info the version = 7
Event Viewer has the following error:

Reinstall the version used to create it and try to open it. You could also post your VSP and let those with older versions of VS try to open it.RickMen wrote:Any suggestions on how I can open the old project?
This is why some users don't uninstall old versions of VS as there is no guarantee that a newer version of VS can open a VSP created by an older version of VS.

Your original VSP would have been created as 32 bit, VS2018 is 64 bit, so your may need to contact Support to ask the question, Can VS 2018 open a 32bit .vsp file
Also your original file will probably include filters and apps. no longer available in VS, SmartSound for example

Re: VS2018 stopped working when trying to open a VSP from 20
This is the reason I use a work-practice of including the VS version used to create a vsp in the vsp file name, eg project_2018.vsp. And usually in my experience, a vsp failing to open means that altho it may have been created with an older version of VS, it was modified by a later one and saved without using the "save as with version type" criteria. In this case as an example, created by X7, modified/saved by 2019, it will fail to open in 2018 because it is now a 2019 vsp regardless of when/how it was originally created..
That said, several things seem unclear in your statement of problem:
- clarify this please:
- your profile includes a 64bit OS - and I assume that also means you use the 64bit version of VS, which only became available with the release of X7 in 2014. For X6 and prior, it was all 32bit files. So the "version = 7" message would fit that. However, how Robert concludes that the failing vsp is a 32bit version eludes me. So maybe both of you could clarify how you got the version=7 message, and how that lead to (as opposed to assumed) a use of 32bits for the original file platform.

Normally 32-bit and 64-bit refers to the application and not its data files.RobertOZ wrote:Your original VSP would have been created as 32 bit, VS2018 is 64 bit, so your may need to contact Support to ask the question, Can VS 2018 open a 32bit .vsp file

Rickmen states he created the VSP in 2008 which would have been Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 (v12) and certainly a 32bit program.

Re: VS2018 stopped working when trying to open a VSP from 20
Your post did not upset me, why should it, with a .vsp created in 2008 there are too many variables which can affect its suitability to be opened in 2018, firstly what original filters/transitions/graphics etc have been used which are no longer available, is there any 16 bit data within the 2008 program, (which is a possibility back then)16 bit cannot be used with 64 bit, so the only way to obtain a definitive answer is to ask support

Robert, you are optimistic that "support" in 2019 will know/care about anything from 2008

Thanks RobertOZ, but my experiences with 'Support' have never been helpful.
Thanks Davidk but the project file is original and untouched/unmodified since I first created it back in 2008.Davidk wrote:.... Hi RickMen
Can you zip and attach the VSP, we can try to open with other versions of video studio, the oldest program I have installed is X7, UVS 7 was a long time ago.
Asik may have X9 32 bit version installed.
Your best option would be to install that older version, your serial number will be saved to your Corel account.
And can you tell us which version you were using?
The last time I had VS 12 aka X2 installed I did have many problems using the program, that was running Windows 10 Your profile shows windows 8 is that correct.
I think you will be very lucky to open the project using the latest versions of Video Studio.

Confused . . .
Problem: can't open vsp in 2018. But to get the project properties as outlined you would have to be able to do that. The version and other detail isn't available in the explorer method.
Quite possibly the problem is that it opens/loads, but when played crashes 2018??

The VSP was created using VS 7 SE. VS7 was preinstalled on the desktop I purchased at the time, I don't have the software/hardware for VS7 anymore.lata wrote:Hi RickMen
