Capture from device crashes both VS X8 & X9 (logitech c922)
Ok... I've never run into this problem before...
I've been using an older Logitech C922 pro for capturing live video. When the camera was new I was using VSX6 and never had a problem 'capturing from device' with X6. And since I moved up to X8 & then X9 I haven;t had a need to capture anything until now.
It's been awhile since I've had to record live, until earlier this past week. But, every time I try to capture from either X8 or X9 (X8 is on my laptop & X9 is on my main PC), but, from both machines, as soon as I choose 'capture from device' (check box 1), I see the light ring on the logitech will flash briefly and 2 seconds later just closes both versions of VS I have on two completely different & separate machines...
So from there I just thought I would just try giving Logitech's capture software a whirl just to make sure I wasn't having a camera issue that seems fine & then thought I would just simply import the files (which look to be standard MP4 files & CiscoOpenH264 as their encoder). So I made a few small quick tests shots, maybe 15-30 seconds in length. And those imported right into both versions of VS with no trouble at all. So I went and made the actual videos but their lengths are about 4-6 mins in length & now, when I try to import them in to either versions of VS, they just hang during import around the 95% mark and just sit there and churn, even after letting them sit for 5 -10 mins...
So then I thought maybe they were corrupt files maybe so, I re-shot one, then two, then three and they still won't import into VS... Even went back and tried making a few small test files again and those import right in, again 15-30 seconds and they go go right in without an issue... But still can't import any of the longer ones that I've done three times over now...
And also, I can seem to upload the raw files directly to FB, YT, Vimeo etc... so I would think that the files aren't being corrupted but they do seem to have a serious audio sync issues...
Any ideas?

Could you upload one of the problem videis to a web hosting site such as DropBox or GoogleDrive? We can then test it to see if we have the same problem

Re: Capture from device crashes both VS X8 & X9 (logitech c9
I think the first one is one of the short tests when I was setting up audio (so you may want to mute the audio as it is terrible) & the second a full take
The short one will open in VS the full take will not...
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1glewj ... Ei5o_mO7bz
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UDrMl ... l3z4abp_Nd
Also & I don't know if this is a factor but, the one that does open is 1280x720 & the one that will not is 1920x1080... BUT, in some of the other tests I shot they were shot also in 1920x1080, but are also short and do open...
The only thing that is really any different from the short takes was I did use an external mic over the logitech's stock mic is pretty much useless for me at the levels that I work at... so not sure if using an external mic has any bearing on whats happening as well...

Re: Capture from device crashes both VS X8 & X9 (logitech c9
Yes, VS don't like that file and crash, also VMS16 totally ignore it.
Only VSDC (it can can read anything) and Shotcut open it.
By looking in it's info I don't like that the video is 30fps but the 4 audio ch are 43fps
and Reference frames : 1 frame... I don't recall ever seen that. I recall low as 2 but never 1
Do you have any settings for the C922 capture?

Re: Capture from device crashes both VS X8 & X9 (logitech c9
FWIW, I just tried the longer clip 2019-10-5_11-39-12.mp4 in VS 2019. When I tried to either insert it in the library pane or the timeline, the File Explorer window would not allow it to be selected, and after a second or two, VS 2019 would close with no error message.
Media Info showed it as a Baseline L.4 AVC video, 1920 x 1080, constant 30 fps frame rate, 15.3 Mbps bitrate and AAC audio, but none of that, as far as I could see, would make VS refuse it.
So I tried converting it to a clip with similar properties using Handbrake. The main difference in the new clip was that it was an mpeg-4 H.264 Main Profile format. The new clip inserted without problem into VS and played perfectly and in high quality as far as I could see.
Interestingly, though, I tried inserting the original file in some of my other editing programs. Cyberlink Power Director 15 would play the audio but showed no image. Vegas Movie Studio 16 would allow me to insert the file in the timeline, but would not allow it to play either audio or video. Magix Movie Edit Pro would also allow it to be inserted in the timeline but when I tried to play it, the scrubber moved but there was no image or audio, and Properties showed neither video nor audio were present. None of these had problems with the Handbrake converted video.
So I am wondering if your Logitech can be set to use Main Profile instead of Baseline? Other than that, I can only suggest that you convert the original video as I did -- though that doesn't explain why some of the video will insert and play, while other samples will not.
EDIT: Having now read asik's message, I can confirm that my VSDC will also accept and play the video.

Re: Capture from device crashes both VS X8 & X9 (logitech c9
Yes the Logitech does have settings & i've tried using just about every pertinent setting. But seems to make no matter what I change seems to make no difference...
So far, it seems clips less than 1 minute load to the timeline & work fine...
But, clips longer than 1 minute just won't load up for whatever reason... No error window or anything, just either hangs forever if I drag to timeline or it closes VS if I try to import (the longer files) to the library...
The other thing that baffling too though is why trying to use capture from device from within VS via this camera also simply closes VS in the same manner as soon as you click 'capture from device'...
Ken,
Could you clarify about using Logitech under a Main profile vs Baseline profile? Is this something in VS? or are your refereeing to using default settings vs custom settings on the Logitech end? if so, I've tried every setting available from default to wild it's mic, my mic & no mic and none had any impact, ...Or if you are talking about Logi's codec, it looks like Cisco's OpenH264 (and sounds like from reading around) to be the only option to use their capture software ... tried disabling it but it just renders it useless from no codec being detected or selected, if there was a way to try a different codec I would but if you can I can't find anything about installing a different one for using it that I've come across anywhere yet...
And yes, I did recapture a few from screencap & those go in just fine but the frame rate loss is not-so-pretty-good... I actually forgot about Handbrake (thanks for reminding me about it), taking it for a test drive now to see how it goes (hopefully they'll be a bit better than SC anyway)

Re: Capture from device crashes both VS X8 & X9 (logitech c9
Main and Baseline are just different types or profiles of the H264 codec and are probably defined by whichever organization looks after H264. I was just wondering if the camera allows you to choose a different codec, but by the sound of it, it doesn't. I in any case thought that both Main and Baseline are pretty standard these days, and since your shorter clips are able to be inserted into your project, clearly VS can see them and play them.OBB wrote:Could you clarify about using Logitech under a Main profile vs Baseline profile?
So the mystery remains as to why it can't see and play longer videos. Maybe it has something to do with the Cisco aspect of your codec, though I confess I know nothing about Cisco. Perhaps someone else may be able to help on that. But I would have thought that Logitech would have been using something which was pretty generally acceptable. However, the fact remains that of our shared programs, only VSDC seems to be able to play these longer clips correctly.

Yeah, I'll agree it's probably something in the codec itself OR Logitech's software has a glitch or some odd quirk that somehow disallows it (maybe)..Ken Berry wrote:Main and Baseline are just different types or profiles of the H264 codec and are probably defined by whichever organization looks after H264. But either way, I was totally able to convert them in HandBrake... Tried a few different settings and am really pleased that it will convert in a lossless manner, nearly flawless. And also enjoy that the audio end of conversion can go as high as 640... though I rarely wound have a need to go above 320, so that was an even nicer surprise in HandBrake...
Well, at least I have a very decent option that will allow me to convert them when I need to capture...
And even nicer that A & V is actually back in sync after editing back in VS : )

Well at keast I have a workaround for the files logitech's capture spits out...
But still only answers 1/2 of the question... Should there be any any reason why when the camera is connected, open VS & when you choose capture by device it closes VS?
If I disconnect the camera & VS will stay running but there is no device to choose to connect to... plug it back in & VS slams shut again...

Can we assume you installed whatever software might have come with the Logitech? That might allow VS to "see" the camera; and it might even install the correct codec...

Re: Capture from device crashes both VS X8 & X9 (logitech c9
Well, when I plugged the camera in either machine it did the usual auto detect plug-n-play installation from Windows. And after I noticed the camera was closing VS I uninstalled that driver & went over to the Logitech site and downloaded their current package and installed that to see if it would fix the problem on my main machine but still has the same result so I didn't even bother doing it on the other machine. And then downloaded the Logitech Capture program alter the fact...
As far as any original software goes, I have the original box & contents it came with from when I bought it new from Best Buy 4-5 years ago and all it consists of is a teeny weeny manual & card showing you how to register your Logitech product online but never came with any software... All I ever did in the past was plug it in & go...

On the logitech software, what formats you can set for capture? can you capture to Divx/AVI ?

Here I can see you can set the encoder, so what you have?

Ok, I see what they show in that... But when look at the same tab from that video in my encoder tab all it shows is 'Cisco OpenH264' ...
If there a way to choose (or install) a different encoder to use, I would if there was but only lists the Cisco one, nothing else. Tried doing a search about how to use or how to install & use a different encoder to their software but all I seem to find is a brick wall about it...
If anyone else can find out how chime right in, I'm all ears...
