weeby wrote: Edit: the issue seems to have been caused by several factors, a mixture of my GPU driver and the 'Force full window redraw when positioning image elements' option under Miscellaneous options not being ticked, many thanks to everyone who posted in this thread for helping :)

Edit 2: to solve the GPU driver issue i downloaded a newer version of AMD Radeon settings which in turn got me the latest driver.
Could you point me in the right direction to find that tick box?

Of course, I have attached an image and highlighted the option I was referring to :)

Having had that same issue with the Balloon and other large images like that, I followed the advice to tick the Force Full Redraw. The issue is now solved and I did not have to update any graphic drivers to make things work properly as the OP apparently had to do. However, given that this option is unticked by default I suspect that it likely takes more computer resources when using it. Only time will tell if it causes further issues if, in fact, it does add to resource load.

What you say makes me glad that I am using an i7.

But I would still like to know if having a GPU affects how well PSP performs. The only way to know that is to use PSP in a system that has an iGPU that is being bypassed by a dGPU. The performance then would be assessed, then re-assessed when the dGPU is removed, forcing the system to rely on its iGPU.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.
