Graphical issue when moving selection or panning (Solved)

Hello!,
First time poster and new Paintshop user,
i have been having issues when moving selections or generally panning the image while zoomed in, when i do so there is a graphical trial left behind similar to that old windows meme (see attached gif).
any idea on how to fix this issue?

Edit: the issue seems to have been caused by several factors, a mixture of my GPU driver and the 'Force full window redraw when positioning image elements' option under Miscellaneous options not being ticked, many thanks to everyone who posted in this thread for helping

Edit 2: to solve the GPU driver issue i downloaded a newer version of AMD Radeon settings which in turn got me the latest driver.

It appears that your CPU is likely the culprit. It could also be a combination of CPU & Memory. Does this happen in other programs besides PSP 2020 ? I would not suspect your video card at this time. Very tricky to diagnose thru the forum so, maybe someone else will come in with other suggestions.

This is a common defect.
It is not noticeable with small images where the selection is small.
But if you open the HotAirBalloon sample image (from Corel) and do the same size of selection as you did, you will observe the same defect. The HotAirBalloon image is 3888x5184 pixels in size.
I think it is related to the way PSP redraws the screen. The redraw doesn't have an optimized algorithm IMHO.

(Tested on my PC with enough Ram and i7 CPU.)
PS : I tested the same manipulation (moving a selection) on the same image in Corel Photo-Paint. There is no "defect" visible in Photo-Paint. The selection moves without any trial.

None that i have noticed, i had been using GIMP previously and had no such issues with that program.

Actually it is a minor bug
You should not start dragging a selection around when it is not promoted as a layer.
To do this, single click on the selection in pick mode and after that you can drag it around.

thanks thats rather helpful advice, but it doesn't help with the trails appearing when panning, even panning a small amount on images will cause it to occur (any gif i make ends up being over 50mb for some reason see my original posts gif and imagine that but the entire image)


is it possible my hardware is to blame?

I do not believe this is our hardware that is at fault……….

If I open an image and choose the Move tool I can drag the image around the screen without seeing any trails.
If I now use the selection tool to draw any shape then Move tool shows the trails
Menu - Selections Select None – now can use Move tool without the traces.

I can add other images as layers and drag those about with no problems
Only when I make a selection do I have trouble.

Size of images does not appear to be relevant, I have same issues with small images.

If it were just my pc that is not upto the job why can I drag ok without selections.

thank you for responding, i have tried reaching out to Corel support who had advised me to try a few things, updating my gpu driver, full clean boot, and repairing C++ 2010.
none of which resolved my issue

hopefully a fix can be found, if not ill just have to make do,

i did notice that i dont have this issue in Corel painter 2019 though, so the problem is definitely isolated to paintshop pro 2020 for me.

I am not sure what you mean by panning. You cannot pan with the Pick/Move Tool - only possible with the Pan Tool or scroll bars.

you can pan with any tool by holding space-bar, but i mean panning in general, it causes the same effect as the first GIF i posted but for the entire image, i hope that makes sense.

There is definitely something wrong with your Windows setup.
Are you using a separate graphic card which might conflict with the Intel i7 own graphics (I have removed the graphic card, and instead using the Intel i5 internal graphic, and have absolute no problems with PSP 2020, and any other programs)
Alternative uninstall PSP with a proper uninstall program to remove all references, and install it again (I have a somewhat worn out Windows 8.1 installation, and sometime needs to install programs with Administrator login for proper working)

i had included an explanation in the main post labelled: Edit, detailing the cause of the issue, but now i see that it wasnt as clear of an explanation as i thought, i shall re-edit to explain further, thanks for pointing that out.
