Replace light cloud with bluer sky?

Post by terrypin »

I make videos of our walking holidays and sometimes have to supplement my own and my wife's photos with Google Street View (SV). (Usually because of exhaustion towards the end of the trek!)

I'd appreciate suggestions on ways to edit the skies. In reality they were as shown in these two examples:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7t50afm3zdvbm ... .JPG?raw=1
https://www.dropbox.com/s/m9xh1fnvh4p54 ... .jpg?raw=1
Less than a minute after the second of those we passed our B&B for the night without capturing a photo, so I made one from Google SV and after some quick enhancement it looked like this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/y8gtczfiq7c4n ... .jpg?raw=1

I then crudely (but still quite laboriously) created this one, which obviously lacks authenticity:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/up855fnfx8mbc ... .bmp?raw=1

Presumably I should have tackled it by somehow using the real skies to paint or paste into my magic-wand selection of SV sky? Is there a quick way to do that please, or any other method? I appreciate that this ignores other important factors like shadows and sunlight!

I have quite a few more skies to edit. Here are a couple further SV examples, after only routine enhancement:

Take a look at LandscapePro
https://www.anthropics.com/landscapepro/
It does more than sky replacement but sounds like it would be useful for what you do generally.

Hi Terry,

You may want to upgrade to 2020 (see the HumbleBundle) and use the new Refine Brush to better remove the sky.

See this thread and the video about the refine brush.

Hi John,

I’ll take a look at it although I’m going to persevere a bit by using my current features. I’m making some progress meanwhile by copy/pasting chunks of other clouds and sky and then nudging, blurring, etc.

I recall there is some way to paint with a selection but need to find and read up on that.

Did you mean paint with a pattern because that is possible.

Good timing Kathy, I’ve just discovered that a few minutes ago! With some practice it looks a handy approach to my sky issue.
