PaintShop Pro 8 No Longer Working

Post by Clive »

Hi

Is there anyone out there who can help me.

I’ve got an old PaintShop Pro 8 (Jasc Software Inc) program on my computer which suits my needs just fine, but recently I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it but now if I try to open the program from the shortcut generated on the desktop I keep getting a message saying “The folder listed below is used to save your user files, it is not currently accessible”.

C:\Users\Clive\Documents\MyPSP8 Files\

Check whether your user file folder is on the network or on a drive that is no longer accessible. If so, Cancel and reconnect to the drive or network and run PaintShop Pro again.
If the folder listed above no longer exists or has been renamed or moved, please specify an emergency read / write directory by pressing OK.
When PaintShop Pro launches you must reconfigure your file locations by selecting:
File – Preferences – File Locations.

I’m a silver surfer and all of the above is just about as clear as mud to me, is there anyone who has the time and patience to walk me through what I need to do in order to get it working again.
My computer is operating on Windows 10 and PaintShop Pro was uninstalled and reinstalled within a matter of minutes so I’m assuming no updates to Windows 10 would affect it.

Again, my thanks for any advice

Hi Clive
and welcome to the forums

Can you confirm that the folder “MyPSP8 Files” does exist within your documents structure.
C:\Users\Clive\Documents\MyPSP8 Files\

If it does exist what is in the folder, what type of files can you see?

If it does exist i suspect the entry in File – Preferences – File Locations may be wrong and needs updating.

Hello Trevor

Thank you for your swift reply, as I said I’m really not into computers other than using them but I will do my best.

There is a shortcut on the desktop saying This PC, if I click it I’m presented with a tree, on it is Local Disk C: and Local Disk D:
If I expand Local Disk C, I can then see Program Files (x86), if I then further expand Program Files (x86) I can then see a file called Jasc Software Inc.

A further expansion of that gives me the following folders:
Animation 3
PaintShop Pro 8
Setup Files

I'm sorry if what Iv'e put all seems a bit basic to you, but I'm afraid it does not take a lot to get me lost where comkputers are concerned.

Cheers

Clive, Unfortunately that is the wrong location

When you click the "My PC" it does show the drives and also other folders
Look for one called Documents

There you should see a folder called “MyPSP8 Files”

It is this folder that the program cannot locate
Can you find this folder?

Hello Trevor

Yes I’ve managed to find the folder “MyPS8 Files” and as you say the field path is “This PC/ Documents.
If I open the MyPS8 folder I’m presented with two further folders:
One is, Scripts- Restricted the other is Workspaces.

Cheers

Hi Clive
First you / we may need help from the dedicated PSP guys, I do not have PSP 8 and if the program has changed then the Documents structure may have changed and the image below may not be accurate.
Start with File – Preferences – Folder Locations

In the File Locations window scroll down for Workspaces
Check the details for the workspace folders, you should see one located in the documents folder
C:\Users\Clive\Documents\MyPSP8 Files

I would suggest you Remove that then Add again

Repeat the process for Scripts – Restricted

As I say I do not have PSP 8 installed to check the exact details, LeviFiction may reply, please

I have a copy of PSP8 that does run at the same time as more modern PSP's, so PSP8 will run on Win 10.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

IDK. Jasc is long gone. PSP8 can be found on Old Version (a website), but the software is a trial only. You would have to reinstall it repeatedly. I'm lucky to have kept my installation media from multiple versions of PSP.

My son set all this up for me many moons ago and created a folder called "Do Not Delete Set up Folder" and on there is Paintshop Pro 8 Retail. exe which is what Iv'e used to reinstall it on my computer, it's obviously done something because I'd deleted the desktop shortcut an now it's back on the desktop.
But when I go to open the program I keep getting the "it is not currently accessible” message.

I cannot tell you about your own system. I think you will have to ask your son for help.

I would suggest that you find somebody who is much more conversant with computers to look at your system and provide that person with all of this information that you have given us. A more computer savvy person might be able to sit down at your computer and help you out.

It looks like you do not have all the folders that should have been created by the installation. When PSP runs it loads up brushes both the ones that come with PSP and also any custom ones you may have created. If you do not have the folder Brushes in your My PSP8 Files then this may be causing the operation to fail.
Can you try manually creating all the folders shown in the image below and see if that helps.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8 and look for Paint Shop Pro.exe. If that exists, set your folder to show Details. Right-click and drag the icon to an empty space. When you let go, a context menu will appear. Select "Create shortcut here." Having created a shortcut, you can now drag it to your desktop, and the program should start.
