Magic Wand Settings?
Hi all,
How should I have the Magic Wand set in order to avoid residual pixels around an object? (See attached image)
My current settings for Magic Wand are:
Mode: Replace
Match mode:RGB Value
Tolerance:20
Contiguous is checked
Feather 0
The arc at the bottom seems to be a shadow so that is probably a different color. It's the outside solid white that I am concerned with.

Background Eraser tool? (Jean-Luc put me onto the glories of this tool.)
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
I thought of that, but it could be very tedious on a large image. I've been told the same image takes only seconds using Photoshop's Magic Wand, so I thought there must be a comparable setting in PSP.

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
1) Is Anti-aliasing turned on?
2) Set tolerance a little higher
3) Set feather to 1
Another option would be layer blend ranges.

There are such settings in PSP.Linda Lou wrote: I thought there must be a comparable setting in PSP.
Set Match Mode to Color and not RGB value: you will get different results.
Tolerance may vary from image to image.
Also, Feather could vary.
Anti-Alias may be checked or not.
Maximum Size of Background Eraser is 3000 pixels in PSP 2018.

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
Anti-alias is not checked. I check that.
Set tolerance how high? 30 instead of 20? Or more gradual?
I'll set Feather to 1 as well. THANKS!
I'll need to find out how to layer blend ranges. I hope it's in the Help section.

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
Tolerance is a guessing game. My preference is to go up 10 points until it's too high, then go down 5 points, and just fiddle with it until I get it close enough. And it may not do what you need anyway, it's just one possible option.
Did these people who told you it only takes a few seconds with Photoshop tell you what settings they used? They aren't exact equivalents, but they should be close.

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
No, I didn't ask about settings because I'm not using PS - figured it might be different in PSP.
The suggested settings above certainly make a big improvement. A closeup still shows a faint haze around the image, but it's better than it was.I found and printed the info for blending layers. A quick try seemed to adjust the whole image rather than just that outside edge of my concern. I'll have to play with that some more in order to wrap my brain around all of that. Maybe if I can get MW settings right I won't need to fiddle with layers.
Thank you so much, everyone!

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
I promoted the Background to a Layer. I then set the Magic Wand to Color, Tolerance = 40. Then did shift-click to add the bottom bracket to MW. Then Invert selection, then delete. both brackets came out cleanly.

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
Thank you ehume. It's difficult to tell on the white background here, so I saved your transparent .png and pasted on a dark layer because many of my backgrounds for screenshots are dark. I don't see much of a difference, but maybe I'm just too much of perfectionist. When I get a chance I'll have to ask my PS friends about their settings. If I learn anything new I'll post back here.

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
Perhaps the other thing to do is to increase the size of the image say 400% , apply your magic wand and delete the background then resize it back to the correct size again - should make any haloes 4 times smaller and possibly negligible.
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

Re: Magic Wand Settings?
That's a great idea, hartpaul. I'll try it after I post this.
I received a screenshot of PS. Sorry about the poor image quality. I had to enlarge it to see the settings. It seems that PSP has more settings for the MW than Adobe does. His image is still cleaner than mine, but for privacy reasons I don't want to post another person's work.
Right now I have PSP Tolerance at 25. I see that PS is at 32. At least at 25 image edges are cleaner than they were before I posted here. I'll keep tweaking things and will try hartpaul's suggestion. Thanks, all.
