I'll try to answer all the questions in this post.
Although my home is in the US, I am currently in Costa Rica and have been for more time than I like, helping my sister who is very ill. We're trying to sell her beach house, if anyone if interested. :-) Sorry about the advertising but I'm telling everyone, just in case.

My sister didn't have a printer and I needed one so I bought this one here in Costa Rica about 16 months ago. I'll be leaving it here when we leave. I doubt that it's under any kind of warranty.

I updated the firmware some time ago but tried updating it again recently, 2 or 3 times, just in case that was the problem, and it always says it's up to date. I looked at the URL that you sent and it is the same size as the one I downloaded and ran. So I doubt that it is anything that I haven't tried.

I didn't know a scanner could output PDF files. Wow, great idea. As I said before, I'm not techie and don't know all this stuff.

Here's a non-techie question. Yes, I can connect to the printer with a cable. However, I need to know if that will screw up my printer's wireless connection in some way. It took me almost two weeks to get the printer to work with the wireless connection and I sure don't want to go through that Hell again. If you tell me I can do that with no problem then I would.

I have had no experience with all in one printers (I avoid them if possible as when one part goes then you have to throw away the whole thing which is so wasteful) .
However if it was only meant to operate through wireless tech then it would or should not have the ability to use a wired connection. They are just two alternate ways of doing data transfer to and from the printer / scanner.
Someone else may have a wireless setup and may be able to check for you.

I have separate Canon printers IP4700 (even bought a couple of backup printers IP3600 and IP4700) and a separate Canon Lide 220 scanner . So am set for some time so long as I can still get the printer cartriges.

Morlaine; My Brother all-in-one does it automatically. It has an automatic interface selection feature that is turned on by default. This lets it automatically change the interface to USB or network depending on which interface is receiving data. I would not be surprised if your HP does the same thing.
