.pspimage Files not displaying the picture in Windows

Post by Kira Resari »

Hello everyone,

I recently tried out PSP2020, decided it only made things worse, and uninstalled it again, sticking with PSPX5.

However, now there's one little annoyance: My .pspimage files, which previously displayed the picture as their icon just like normal image files such as .png and .jpg, suddenly don't display the picture anymore, but just the PSPX5 file logo.

Is there any way to fix this _without_ un- and re-installing PSPX5? I do have the disk lying right next to me, but the last time I un- and re-installed it, even though I specifically saved my workspace, I still lost quite a bunch of settings, and it took me over a month to remember all the little adjustments I had made and put them back in place again.

Alternatively, is there a reliable way to save all these little customisations while un- and re-installing?

Thanks in advance,
Kira

Menu > File > Workspace > Save. Save as named workspace. I always find the file (I think it is in Documents) and save it to the Desktop -- where PSP can't find it. Then uninstall, reinstall. Good luck. I needed a third-party app to restore my .pspimage files.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

I managed to get it working again after trying around for a little bit. I did two things, so I can't be 100% sure what did the trick.

First, I installed the following TPP (PSP Thumbnail Handler): https://www.botproductions.com/pspthumb/
That did not appear to do anything just yet.

Then, I followed the steps on this particular help page from Corel: https://support.corel.com/hc/en-us/arti ... Thumbnails
Surprisingly, this worked! First, I remapped my .pspimage files to Notepad++, and even at that precise moment the thumbnails reappeared. Imagine that: Notepad++ files with picture thumbnails!
Then I reverted it back to PSPX5, and the thumbnails stayed.

I then deinstalled the PSP Thumbnail Handler again, and the Thumbnails remained, so it looks like the remapping of the file types really did the tick. I'll tomorrow also try this on my trusty laptop. If it does not work, I'll let you know.

Okay, Update: I experimented around a bit, and it stopped working again after I uninstalled PSP Thumbnail Handler and restarted the PC, and I could not get it tow work again simply by de- and re-associating the file types.

So here's the definite step-by-step tutorial of how to fix this (at least for PSPX5):

1.) Download and install PSP Thumbnail Handler (https://www.botproductions.com/pspthumb/)
2.) Associate the .pspimage files with another program (e.g. Notepad++, via Right-click > Open with... > ☑Always use this program)
3.) Re-assosciate the .pspimage files with PSP again

It did not work for me. I still get a folder full of icons with C:\ProgramData\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro 2018\Corel_01 for .PspBrush files. Thankfully, the icons do open in PSP 2018 (my main PSP). I suppose I should be grateful, for C:\ProgramData\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro 2018\Corel_12 show PSPx7 icons and open that program to show .PspSelection files.

Edit: I have found success with what Patara suggested: SageThumbs. Now my .PspBrush and .tub files show as thumbnails.

I did run the PSP Thumbnail Handler first, however, and .pspshape files show the lower right corner badge that app leaves behind, so I'd recommend using both.
