Upgraded from 2018 to 2020 Ultimate, "File-New" greyed out?!

Post by ocddave »

I upgraded form 2018 Ultimate to 2020 Ultimate, but the "File>New" and "File>New from Template" are greyed out? When I turn on the "Manage" tab, I can then use those "File>New" and "File>New from Template" options, but no idea why they don't work from the "Welcome" screen. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You could try a reset of the program to see if that corrects the issue. Here are the instructions, if needed. They reference X6 but will work with all versions.

PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

You can also go into File > Preferences > General Program Preferences... > Tabs and set Edit as your opening tab (you can also set the Manage and Adjust tabs to display).
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Yeah, nothing seems to be working, have a trouble ticket in with them now, I basically can't create a "New" file.

You state that they don't work from the Welcome screen , but do work from manage mode.

Have you tried going to Edit Complete mode and seeing if they work there?
Go to Edit workspace then File > Workspace and make sure Complete is ticked. Then try File > New and File > new from Template. You might also set in your preferences that the default opening space is Edit. Then save your workspace.

I have never done File > New from the Welcome screen before and it does work in PSP 2019.

The greying out might be a new feature of PSP 2020. I don't have that to test so others that have that latest version installed might test that out and see if it works.

I do know that when on the welcome screen and you do File > New in PSP 2019 it flips you into the Edit mode so in effect you cannot create a new document on the welcome screen - it has to go to the Edit Mode.
Corel may have deactivated that method leaving you on the Welcome screen so they can keep you there to possibly buy some new product.

That latter is true for PSP 2018, too: if you are in the Welcome tab or the Manage tab and if you select New you will be presented with a window where you can choose what your new document will look like. When you press OK, you will be transported to the Edit tab, as hartpaul notes for PSP 2019. Graying out the option on the Welcome tab would make sense. Graying out the option on the Manage tab would also make sense.

I too never open a file from the Welcome page. However, I just tried it in PSP 2020 (Ultimate). File > New and New from Template were certainly active. Clicking on New brought up the size dialogue box, and when I had chosen, it flipped into the (Complete) Edit page.

I also thought I would test with the Edit page in Essentials view. But again on the Welcome page both File > New and New from Template were both active and effective.

Hi I just done a fresh install because of new system drive upgrade.

I Installed PSP 2020 pro and couldn't get anything to work as it had a totally diffferent interface/layout.
So after clicking here and there in preferences without any joy.
I then came across 'Workspace' menu heading in the FILE section and selected COMPLETE.
Now verything is back to usual with the full interface, toolsbars and palettes.
I'm now able to create NEW files.

Hope this helps with your problem.

Best Wishes.
Tony
