As far as I know the disc is automatically finalised

As for a box to tick I have never seen that, unless the options change when using RW-DVD

Did you create a data DVD containing video files or did you create a proper video DVD? If the latter then finalizing is done automatically

The latter. I thought that was the case but needed to check. The DVD player is very new but on reading the instruction leaflet it only takes MPEG1 or 4. I rerendered it from Mpeg 2 to 4 but it still won’t play. Bad buy. Thank you for responding.

Using your computer, view the content of the disc
What type of files and folders do you see on the disc.

Is the disc a dvd-r type or dvd-rw

Hi Trevor

I've bought a new unit now and it's playing my discs fine. Out of interest the files are as attachment and the disc is DVD+R. I had to photo the page as my screenshots are too larger files for some reason. EXPENSIVE HOBBY!

Thanks again for your help.

I have no idea what that instruction leaflet is referring to. DVD players can only play video in the mpg format. When you create a DVD, all source video is "converted" to mpg and it does not matter if the source is mp4, avi, wmv or whatever.
Can you post the make/model of this DVD player?

Hello

The information is as attachments. I tried over a few days with many of my own created discs but all I get was a message on the screen CANNOT PLAY THIS DISC.

Thank you for your interest.

I think you will find that excerpt from the manual refers to DVD data discs and the formats they will play if the data files in those formats is recorded to the disc.

But as canuck says, you must use mpeg-2 and only mpeg-2 if you are making a correct video DVD... And it sounds to me as though you did not make a correct video DVD, but a data DVD...

Hi. No it was a correct DVD mpeg2 disc burned on my computer using video studio just like I’ve done for years. The disc played ok on another DVD player when I tried it. It just won’t play on the Sony one. The new Panasonic I’ve bought plays it very well so it can’t be a data disc.

Thanks for your help.

Do other DVDs play on the Sony?

Back in the "bad old days" when I used to make DVDs, I found that the high end standalone players could be very picky about what they played -- and I'm talking here about the Sonys and Panasonics of the world... Sometimes it was the speed at which a disc was burnt which caused the player to reject it (usually too fast was a no no); sometimes it was a slightly too high bitrate used in the production; and sometimes it was even the color of the dye on the disc itself! I also found that for the most part it was the el cheapo players which would happily play almost anything round and silver!! :D

Did you check the regional code? Some desktop players come with the preset region and this can be in conflict.
