Does that mean when using File>Preferences you must associate PSP with no other file associations other than the default .pspimage?
I had to install PSP 8.1 on a new computer and am having the thumbnail/image view problem on that as well as with PSP 2018 on another computer.
I'd really like to fix it in both cases.

I'm sorry, but my last post on this issue was Aug 2019. I have gotten old enough that I no longer remember . . .
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

That's ok. I just needed to take a break from the computer for a few hours before I could wrap my brain about the best way to proceed..

In my case it is not a One Drive issue because OD was removed before PSP was installed. If I remember correctly OD's problem was that all image files had icons. That was something different

To be more specific:
For the computer with PSP 8.1, the problem is that PSP 8.1 is not showing .pspimage files when browsing and is reporting "Not a valid PSP image" for PSP images that were created by Corel 2018. I just don't want to have to save everything as a .png or .jpg if I am working on a project that I need layers for.
Is it just not possible to use layered images between both versions?

Editing to update that after some rest, I re-registered the .dll for PSP 2018 and I can now see Thumbnails of images created with 2018. I still have the above problem on 8.1, however.

Linda you can save layers in PSP 2018 as a PSP 8 compatible file so that the file will open in that version.
The different versions you can save as is under Options in the Save Dialog box.
But when doing that your layers can't use any of the newer things available e.g.styles etc.
