Layers
When I got into PSP in the early 1990's, layers were not yet part of PSP, and I was able to do without them for years. But now I want to know about layers.
I read the Help file about layers, but it only talks about the upper register, the top two sliders. I have been playing around with the lower register but I can't figure it out: So, what I need is someone to explain what these are or point to a reference.

Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Re: Layers
What you have illustrated is the Blend If operation . Layers is a whole other kettle of fish. Blend If looks at the way two layers interact with each other . Looking at Layers can be restricted to just two layers but can also involve many more layers along with ways of controlling movements and operations on the layers - movements, distortions, Blend modes, masks, adjustment layers, linked layers locked layersvisibility of layers etc.
For Blend If , try these links, they are for Photoshop, but the main difference is the dialog boxes and you don't need to use the Alt or Options key to get the split sliders - they are already present in PSP.

Re: Layers
OK. I have viewed all of the tutorials. What is called "blend if" in PS seems to be called "Blend Ranges" in PSP:
There is an alt function -- typical invisible PS shenanigan. Are they the top and bottom sliders of PSP?
Edit1 -- top and bottom sliders in each box, This Layer and Underlying Layer.
Edit2 -- layers seem to have been added with PSP 5. I remember starting with PSP 3.

I start with two images from one of the Blend If videos above. Top layer (the white portion was transparent in the original):
Bottom layer (promoted from background):
It looked like this:
Then these blend settings:
To get what you see behind the settings.

Re: Layers
Outstanding tutorial! I wish the Learning/Discovery Center was as clear. I've been experimenting some with blend ranges, but this is very helpful. I stopped your tutorial many times to practice with various tools. This is doubtless what you intended. Mm. Sandwiches on the table.Cassel wrote:There is a tutorial and an exercise here if you are interested:

Glad you liked it and found it useful (and entertaining?).
I wonder if Corel would want a Sandwich tutorial for the Discovery Center! LOL

They should. Those ingredients make great layers. And sandwich as metaphor. What a simple -- and because simple very effective -- way to teach about layers.Cassel wrote:Glad you liked it and found it useful (and entertaining?).

Who knows? Maybe Corel will ask me (and the video would need to be updated as it uses an old version)

Re: Layers
The video makes reference to the older versions, where "Deform" is used instead of "Pick." Other than that, it sticks to modern conventions. I don't see any need to change it.Cassel wrote:That is how I teach. I am very VISUAL.ehume wrote:
